Subject: Welcome To The Brethren Genealogy-History Network
Hello, and welcome to the Brethren Network! This message is
sent to all new subscribers of this network.
The Brethren Genealogy Network is here for one and for all to
share and enjoy. It was first created on 9th May 1996. As of
now there are hundreds of persons receiving it.
The term "Brethren" as used here alludes to all persons and
places that now, or in the past, have any type of connection
to the church groups known as: Church Of The Brethren; German
Baptist; Tunkers; Dunkers; Grace Brethren; and other church
groups that descend from the movement started by the Alexander
Mack group during 1708 at Schwarzenau Germany.
This conference is for the discussion of Brethren History and
genealogy. Care should be taken not to over do discussions about
such things as computer software, general research methods, etc.
This is not to say that such things can not be mentioned, however
in some cases it may be best if such topics be sent privately
rather then to everyone on the Brethren Network. Try to keep in
mind that some of the users have to pay by the minute for their
on-line time. For them non-genealogy related messages are not
always welcome.
Feel free to post as many Brethren related queries as you wish.
If you are not sure that they are Brethren related but think
they may be, go ahead and enter them. Brethren Family and Church
related histories are also welcome.
So long as they are Brethren Genealogy or History related you are
encouraged to ANSWER ON THIS LIST-SERVER rather than by private
e-mail. That way persons with similar questions or knowledge may
see your interest and join in. And please don't forget to update
the SUBJECT HEADERS OF YOUR MESSAGES. Many people only scan these
subject headers to see what holds their interest. The subject header
is the statement in the header of your message that tells what the
message is about. For example in this message it is "Welcome To
The Brethren Genealogy Network."
Although I am the group's moderator I hope to govern with a
very loose hand, and will be open for suggestion at all times.
Suggestions should be sent e-mail to: < joe.boss(a)erinet.com > and
not directly to the list-server. If such suggestions seem to have
merit they may be put into use.
If for any reason I am not available to help with the daily operation
of this Brethren Genealogy Group you should contact Ron McAdams who
is the group's co-moderator.
Ron's e-mail address is: McAdams(a)udayton.edu
Most persons interested in genealogy are very helpful and caring
people, however for that one out of several hundred that tries to
"pick crow" the following is included: Quarreling, soap-boxing,
foul language, flaming, etc will not be tolerated and will be
reason, with or without warning, for a person being disconnected
from the Brethren List Server.
We also ask that if you use "carbon-copy" or "forwarded" messages
to the Brethren Network do so with extreme moderation. Do not send
attached files over the server. If you send attached files, send
them to a person's private e-mail address, never to the list-server
at the e-mail address <BRETHREN(a)RootsWeb.com>
It is important that you take note that the Brethren List-Server
is set up to automatically send all messages sent to it back to a
return e-mail address of <BRETHREN(a)RootsWeb.com>. But sometimes
that fails, particularly if you click the "Reply Button" on your
screen. Watch the "SEND TO" and "REPLY TO" lines in the header
of your outgoing message and be sure they read BRETHREN(a)RootsWeb.com
If for one reason or another you want your message to go out to a
private e-mail address, then change the "SEND TO" line in the header
of your message before you send it.
We are using the The RootsWeb list server and it is set up to
automatically drop you from it's list if your messages start bouncing
(can not get to you) for one reason or another. Examples include;
you have not been picking up your e-mail so your mailbox is full and
won't take anymore messages, or your internet provider has equipment
failure, or any of several other reasons.
If this happens it is not a reflection on you in anyway. It is just
the way the RootsWeb server works. Just sign back on by sending a
message to "BRETHREN-request(a)RootsWeb.com" and place nothing in
the body of the message except one word: SUBSCRIBE
We also call to your attention to a Brethren World Wide Web Page
(WWW) at URL:
http://www.cob-net.org/genhis.htm
The page's administrator is Ron Gordon who can be reached at
rongordon(a)cob-net.org
Thanks for being with us and for reading this.
