Dear List
Thought the story re: Daniel Maybee ( indicted for murder in 1852 ) & on
Maxine's family tree was interesting & an asset to the List. We all have a
skeleton or 2 perhaps. Don't know that name but found it interesting.
I have a difficult time, living in Virginia, learning about Jackson Co.,
especially Seymour. Not much Indiana material in our libraries. Jonette
Johnson's 2 books of Obituaries have helped me gain some perspective on life
in the mid 1800's in Jackson County. The obits. gave a lot of information
about what people did for a living and how hey died. Those obits tell
things that are omitted in today's obits.
Many were working for the railroads, so many accidental deaths re: brakemen,
etc. far too many were childhood diseases that stripped families of
children, the tuberculosis that took young adults & mothers, fathers, farm
accidents, accidental fires. Her obits led me to search for information on
the GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. I found it & was fascinated .
My great great grandparents were name ALEXANDER & MAGGIE LESLIE, immigrants
from Ireland. They are in the 1870 census. At his death, she married
widower ,JOHN THOMAS SWIFT, both bringing grown & almost grown children to
the marriage. Her dau. MAGGIE LESLIE married his son GEORGE SWIFT ( 1885)
& at the wedding reception the mother of the bride had a stroke ! She passed
away a day or so later. GEORGE SWIFT was a train engineer & died 1893 of
pneumonia, at age 43. Maggie lived on to marry 2 more times & died in Va.
in 1942. I remember her well....a great redheaded Irishwoman
I want the story ( not just a list of names- dates) of my ancestors. What
was their life like & what was happening in the country when they were
living. I enjoy hearing those types of stories.
I thought Mr Maybee's story was interesting.
