Thanks so much, Mike! My relative, William Jaynes is supposed to be buried
there (d.1931). Did you know that family? I'll check it out in a few weeks
and let everyone know how it goes.
Jeanne
Jeanne,
Believe it or not, I was a student at Conologue school when it was a
one-room school. First Mrs. Green, then Mrs Wringer were my teachers. It is
not the name of a community, just a school-church. I started school there
in
first grade back in 43-44. Then went to Oklahoma for a year during the end
of WW II. We came back for the rest of my second grade and third grade. In
about '46, it was closed and we were transferred to Walnut Grove.
Going from Seymour, east toward North Vernon, It's the first road
north.
You'll run into a T ending. Just off to the right was Conologue. It's a
house now and does not even look like a school. I was by there this last
spring. It's probably been remodeled several times. I also noticed that the
garage-shed-wood/coal storage bldg was gone.
Fleming was a sawmill just north of the Railroad tracks. Going north
to
the end of the T-roads was COnologue. The cemetery of which you speak is
just across the road from the old school. It's on a northeast corner. We
used to have as a project each spring, a weed pulling and picnic. It was
smallish as I remember, only about 20-30 headstones. This area may be
overgrown with weeds not and un-seeable. The house that abutted it on the
South side belonged to Claude Beavers and family. LeRoy Beavers is in the
Phone book and probably knows it better than I do. When the little one
roomed school became a church on Sunday's, this little grave yard served as
it's cemetery.
When I saw your post, it brought back sooooo many memories. I'm a
retired
school teacher and those memories are very fond. That was so long ago but
when I read your post, it all came back to me.
Hope this helps you some.
Mike Schrink, Seymour.
