Arlene and Sherri,
My husband's Cox ancestors lived in Jennings Co., IN before moving to
Grassy Fork Twp, Jackson Co., IN, and we've had our eye on the William
Cox who lived in the same Grassy Fork Twp. at the same time as they
did. Jesse Cox, my husband's ancestor, ran a sawmill somewhere in that
area.
Anyway, all that to say we found two deeds for William D. Cox and Nancy
Ann in Jennings Co., IN in the mid- to late 1830s. The first deed was
concerning property William D. Cox bought from Wheelon W. Evans on
November 12, 1836. The land was located starting with the southeast
corner of Section 35 in Township 7, north of range 8 east in the
district of lands sold at Jeffersonville, thence north with the section
line to George King ..... corner thence west to the present road leading
from Vernon through the Davis settlement to Napolian, thence southwest
with the said road to the southern boundary of the said Section 35,
thence east with the said boundary line to the place of beginning
supposed to contain 80 acres more or less.
William and Nancy Ann sold that same property in 1838 to Griffin
Robinson. William was found in the 1840 Jennings Co., IN census, but he
and his wife disappear after 1840.
We wondered if the William found in Grassy Forks Twp in Jackson County
might not have been the son of this William. And, my husband and I
suspect this William was related to our Cox's also living in Grassy Fork
Twp. We have strong hunches as to their ancestors, but have no proof at
this point, so are keeping silent until we can find that proof to tie
them together.
