According to records of Company H, 27th Indiana Infantry, Thomas J LETT , a
farmer age 18 from Jennings co dies of a gunshot wound during the battle at
Gettysburg, and is buried at Gettysburg National Cemetery.
The battle of Gettysburg was fought between July 1st and 3rd 1863.
I have every reason to beleive that this Thomas J Lett is the son of my
second great grandfather, John H LETT and his wife, Zerelda Ann RANDALL.
According to census records:
1850--Marion township, Jennings co IN--John is listed as a miller---I know he
appears in early history of Paris as a miller.
1860--Montgomery township, Jennings co IN--John is listed as a farmer
1870 census of Ward one, Seymour, Jackson co IN---John is listed as a teamster
Thomas J Lett appears as a son of the family on the 1850 & 1860 census, but
is missing from the 1870 census. He was age 16 on the 1860 census, so there
is the possibility that he simply married and moved away---but I have not
found a marriage for him in the area, and family history says that he died in
the war---
I am sending for state and federal records---but does anyone know of
Jackson/Jennings county resources for civial war deaths?
Thanks so much,
Sherri
