It sure would be nice tho, speaking of the Free Program at the Seymour
Library, if those speaking or attending
would share information discussed with those of us who can't attend....
I'm really curious about the use of the Periodical Source Index, and the
PERSI, especially how to use it?
Isn't the PERSI online? I was thinking it was, but I'm probably mistaken,
as usual.
Charolotte Sellers:
I'm still looking for the death place or an explanation of where the BESS
children died in the fire in 1877, and where their mother is buried from
the year 1876. I have no names of the children, I do have one name, Mary
who was the next to the oldest. Her name is on the 1870 census for
Jackson Co., but the other two children
had been born and died between 1870 and 1880. Their mother was Eliza
Jane Drury BEST(BESS).
According to the newspaper obituary on the children, in a cemetery book at
the Brownstown Library, their
name was listed as BESS not BEST......
Something else, and I guess I need to have the complete newspaper article
of the children's death explained to me, as I still don't quite understand
the location, of the fire. Was it Reddington, or Seymour, or Brownstown
where they died in the fire? The article is terribly confusing.
Oh, and Charlotte, I did end up finding James BEST (the elder, grandfather
to the children above). He had
remarried and removed to AL, with his new family. That's why we can never
find his death anywhere! So
you can stop looking for that. The reason I know this, two distant
cousins from this marriage contacted me,
and they had all the information! Isn't that wonderful? They are
descendents of the son from this marriage.

Happy Spring, y'all!
For those of you close enough to get to the Jackson County Public
Library in Seymour on Saturday, April 21, a free daylong program is
planned on using two tools for local and family history.
Registration is required to guarantee seating. The Friends of the
Library group is sponsoring the program. Registrations will continue
through April 14.
Organizations with resources for local and family history will be
making brief presentations and answering questions about their
resources.
Featured speaker will be Jennifer Doerflein Hines on "Effectively
Using the Periodical Source Index" and "County Histories: Beyond the
Basics." An instructor in genealogy, Jennifer supervised the PERSI
project at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne and should
have lots of good tips on its use.
PERSI indexes local & family history articles back to 1800 and has
more than a million records. Among periodicals indexed is the JCGS
Genealogy Jottings. Each of the JCPL libraries has access to the
database.
County histories often are disregarded as a source because of their
obvious errors and omissions but they also can provide clues not found
anywhere else. Those too will be discussed.
Hope you can join us as Jennifer talks about ways we may not have
explored to use these resources. Call 1.812.522.3412 ext 224 for
questions or ext 230 for reservations.
See you there!
