My wife's g-g-g-grandfather was Enoch JENKINS, born in Pennsylvania. He and family
are in the Jackson Co., IN census listings for 1850 - 1860 - 1870. I'm interested in
learning more about Enoch and would like to clear up apparent inaccurate data for him
found on the internet.
Summaries of his census listings follow:
13 Sep 1850 - Jackson Township. Was listed with his family at dwelling 703, family 714,
beginning at line 31 as: Enoch (32), Elizabeth (28), Nathaniel (10), William (6), Eliza
C. (4) and George (3/12 years old). Enoch was a farmer with real estate valued at $200.
He was born in Pennsylvania, while the other family members were born in Indiana. Two of
the children, Nathaniel and William had attended school within the census year. NARA
series 432, roll 152, page 144.
12 Jun 1860 - Jackson Township. Was listed with his family at dwelling 365, family 362,
beginning at line 30 as: Enoch (37), Lucy Ann (27), Nathaniel (19), William (16), Eliza
C. (14), George G. (10), John (8), Rebecca (2) and Mary E. (under age 1). Enoch was a
farmer whose personal estate was valued at $200. No value was listed for real estate. He
was born in Pennsylvania, while other family members were born in Indiana. Lucy Ann could
not read or write. Nathaniel's occupation was listed as day laborer. [In this census
Enoch is only 5 years older than his 1850 census age. It appears that Elizabeth has died
and that Lucy Ann is his new wife. The fractional age for youngest child Mary E. is
unclear, possibly reading 6/12.] NARA series M653, roll 568, page 693.
About 26 Sep 1870 - Washington Township. Was listed at dwelling 38, family 38, beginning
at line 16 as: Enoch (50), Lucy A. (36), Adaline (19), John (12) Fanny (5), Ida B. (5),
and Alfred (3). Another Jenkins adult, Alice (46) was also listed. Enoch was a farmer
with real estate valued at $500. His personal estate value was $300. Lucy A. was a house
keeper. Enoch was born in Pennsylvania, while all others listed were born in Indiana.
John and Fanny were listed as attending school within the census year. Adaline could not
read or write. Enoch was listed as a male citizen over age 21. [Enoch has aged 18 years
since the 1850 census and 13 years since the 1860 census. Child John has aged only 4
years since the 1860 census. Who Adaline and Alice are is unclear and suggests that this
household may be a "blend" of Jenkins families.] NARA M593, roll 326, page 486.
