My Gilberts were from Cortland and I'm told they were quite well-to-do.
Squire Gilbert, b. 27 Feb 1790 in NY or Quebec Canada. married Annie
Webb Harrison on 15 May 1832, she died 25 Apr 1843. She was one of 5 or 6
marriages, but I don't have all the marriage info. Several of the
Gilberts including both Squires and Jonah are buried in the Wray Church
cemetary.
Squire Whitney Gilbert, Jr. - b. 25 Apr 1840, married California Day
they lived in Medora and their home is still there.
Jonah Gilbert - b. 25 Apr 1843
Polly Gilbert
Emaline Gilbert - b. 5 Aug. 1835
Joseph Gilbert - b. 7 Aug. 1832, d. 9 Oct. 1882

Hello list !
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of town Cortland
was around
1880. If someone lived there what kind of work would they do? I do
not think
it was farm land. Mines? Railroad? Was this like a low income area?
I am
interested in knowing any kind of history from that town. Thanks
Wanda
