Charles Richard Stewart of Terre Haute, Indiana and also Jackson County, was killed November 13, 1944, while serving in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. His status remains missing or buried at sea and his name is honored on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
We have found the following reference at the Indiana State Library website; World War II database. We do not have the information because we do not have access to the microfilms here in the Philippines but we are hoping for some help from our posting. Our goal is to find the families of Indiana servicemen and present them with free photographs of their loved one’s grave sites or their names as they appear on the “Tablets”. This information will increase our chances of finding the families. Please help us!

Hello, I am a retired American veteran residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. A year ago we visited the memorial as visitors but came home with a mission in our hearts. As we gazed over the beautifully manicured acres and the 17,202 American graves, it was obvious only a few families had ever visited their graves.
I stepped into the soft grass and focused my camera on one of the white crosses, a grave of an Ohio soldier. A strange calmness was in the air as I walked a few more steps and a cross of an Indiana soldier lay square in my path. The letters of the inscription on the marker was bolder than ever, here lay a soldier from my home state.
At that moment a quiet brainstorm aroused my humble thoughts. I wondered if I could locate any of the families of these men. My stride became more defined and within a few moments I had located and photographed eight more graves.
Since those gut-wrenching but touching moments we have energized our efforts in finding the families of these American men from Indiana. We have located well over 100 and have delivered the FREE photographs to them via email.
Please visit our website and see the men we have honored and the families we have assisted in finding a more genuine closure of a horrible tragedy.
http://fizkid.tripod.com/
Our success in finding the families was the result of journalists, amateur genealogists, historians, historical societies, librarians and lots of wonderful Hoosiers and those with Indiana ties across America.
During our search we have also reached families from other states as well and have filled special requests for photos from the Manila American Cemetery. We presently have photographed only the graves of the Indiana soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen; however we have photographed all of the names that are engraved on the "Tablets of the Missing". We offer them free of charge to anyone who asks.
We ask for your help in finding their families. We understand this is a genealogy board but we do not need immediate genealogy in that form, we need leads to find the families. Please become one of our special volunteers today and find the family of an Indiana serviceman from near your home. A list of the men from your Indiana county is available, free and all you must do is request it.

Yes. This is the same family.
Gilgal is the only cemetery "in Heltonville" but there are between 15 and 20
known small cemeteries located in the sourroung area in Pleasant Run

Thankyou,

Hi Dwayne,
Yes, you're right, there are 2 John H's, but with different fathers. The first was my ancestor, John Hugo Rothert. The second was John (Heinrich, I think) Meier. Just to confuse us, I think.
John H. Rothert moved to Indianapolis (Marion County) when he was about 16. His sister Mary followed shortly after.

where your james johnson died? mildred
Mildred;
The first lines I have separated in your message below are the Sturgeons I am
referring to. There could very well have been several James Johnson's there.
There were several Johnson families there that were related. The family I am
talking about of Johnson, was in census not far from the Sturgeon David's . .
James and Jerusha and I saw Moses, Jerusha's father, and Thomas Jefferson
Brannan living with them and maybe listed first??, not far from the Sturgeon
family when I looked at the 1850 census. Thomas Jefferson was the first school
teacher in Grassy Fork TWP school there. 1850.
The Caroline at 18 yrs. was Evaline's sister and was staying with them at the
time of the affair of Caroline with Thomas.. David and Evaline, I think had
maybe 3/5 ch in 1850. Probably had more after. James and Jerusha had abt 4
girls then.
The other James may been a cousin to the one who mar. Jerusha Brannan.
What relation to the Sturgeon's are you????

I know a STURGEON lived in Grassy FORK several years ago when i went there.
he gave me data on the Sturgeons and PRINCE was in it. I have to find it.
Catherine who married JAMES JOHNSON in1836-37 , Is that the same JAMES JOHNSON?
we didnot know her maidrn nam. We thought BRYANT was it, as JACOB married her
inKY 1830 after his first wife died. Is BRANNON the name of the spouse of
James JOHNSON. Maybe he was married before CATHERINE? YOUNG. I live in INDPLS
and a tavern on SOUTHEASTERN and RUAL ST. was there when i was a child IT was
torn down a couple years ago. My father went there a lot. Istill have no
proof who the CATHERINE is who married James JOHNSON and her 2 YOUNG girls who
married ISSAC POWELL. One of the girls was Hetty couison of H.S.T. Mildred
Mildred;
I will have to send you some info on my James Johnson and family. We may have 2
diff. ones here.
Mine mar. about same time as you have here. I don't know what her middle name was
and if same one , that could have been her middle name.
Wife was Jerusha Brannon(an). She was named after her Grt grandmother Jerusha
Pitcock who mar. William Brannnon(an) the Grandfather of Thomas and Emanuel.
The family moved in abt. 1852/3 to Marengo, Iowa Co. Ia.
Thomas Jefferson illegitimate dau was Caroline's only child. She never married.
When Eliza mar, she moved in and lived with Eliza and Albert Mace, her spouse
until she d in abt 1915??( my memory here. I have several pictures and all gen.
on their 10 ch.
A man by name of Russell lived in Ind. who d. a few yrs ago, put a message out in
genealogical helper looking for my Grt Uncle , in 1988 ref. to finding the Thomas
Jefferson Brannan.
I saw it and contacted him not knowing abt the incident. Research put it all
in place. I sent him all my info on the Brannan side. Russell was looking for his
wife's family and Thomas was her grt grandfather. His brother was my Grt
Grandfather. Emanuel Brannan. Moses and Cassandra French Davis was their parents.
Thomas b 1830 in Jackson Co In. and Emanuel b in Dearborn Co in 1828. The
James Johnson family ended up with 8 girls and last was 1 boy by 1860? in Ia. I
think about 4 girls were b in Jackson Co. Ind. James got land in Ia. and it is
still in Johnson Family descendants hands and a big farm I think.
One of the Sturgeons was kinda a prominent figure I think there at the time.
I have to check your E mail I replied to.
Where do you fit in this family??? If you want I can send you copy of the
pictures and Gen. I have on the Prince and Eliza ( Albert) Mace family. They
moved to Mo. I believe.
The incident happened in abt Sept? of 1850 ands Eliza was b in June 1851. Took
the name Prince.
Caroline was the dau. of Jacob Prince and was staying with her sister who mar. the
Sturgeon
at the time close to the Johnson's as Moses and Thomas were living with them at
the time.
The 1850 census has them on it.

Dwayne,
I've been looking at your database at Rootsweb since I saw your post about the Meyer/Rotert pictures, and I think our lines connect in several areas.
Ida Mae Rotert Lauf (7/12/28 - 11/24/04) was the daughter of George W. and Amelia Franke Rotert, sister of Louise Meyer and Herman, and is a cousin by marriage.
Anna Catherine Vehslage/Verhslage Meier Rothert is my 5grandmother. Her 1st husband was actually Harmon H. Rothert, both b. in Hannover and travelled to US in the early 1840's. They had 2 children, John H. and Catherine Mary both born in Louisville, KY. before Harmon died there in 1846. Anna Catherine married Johann F. Meier in Jeffersonville, IN and they returned to Seymour, where JF had been living. There they had Katherine, Louise and John H. Meier.
There's also a connection to Fred and Elizabeth Burbrink. My mother and grandmother used to play at their farm, as did the Meier girls. I haven't figured it out yet, but I think there may be a Burbrink/Smith connection -- another branch of the family.
If I can offer any additional information, please let me know.

Elizabeth, although I can't answer your question I find it intrigueing that children were being offerred as indentured servants in the mid to late 1800s.
I have Van Metres in my family also but I don't know anything of them after about 1800.
Is Lewis Garrett a descendant of this family?
