Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Thanks Have a lovely day, Ruth
While we're chasing place names - I have another...
Clear Spring Sprinklings (Owen Twp), Brownstown Banner, Wed Oct 12, 1904
"Mr. Samuel Hawkins and Miss Flossie Siglar were married at Brownstown last
Monday, and last Tuesday night occurred a grand chavirari. They are both
highly respected young people of this place an ye scribe joins in wishing
them a long, happy and prosperous life. They have gone to house-keeping on
the David Hawkins farm at Antioch."
The HAWKINS' (according to census from 1880-1920) lived in Owen Twp - what
is the place at one time referred to as Antioch ??
Janet
Same place... my mom was born and raised just down the road from Clearspring
and she said the name changed before she remembers but that her parents
always talked about when the town was called Mooney. I have seen old news
paper clippings with references to Mooney but i dont recall the dates.. i
will try to find something on it, we have tons of microfilm of the old
Brownstown Banner that has the newsy paragraphs from all the small

Carla, thank you so much. I still have to pinpoint where the farm was. I
will have to dig out the copies I got of the original land patent's for
Johnson's farm. Am still trying to connect parents to him, and it is not
easy. So many Smith's to sort out. Do you know when Mooney had it's name
change? I cannot find a map that lists it as such. I had ancestors who
helped organize some of the townships in Jackson County. I have the History
of Jackson County book, but it is of no help on the towns. William was also
a member of the GAR. I guess it is time I make a trip back down there and
see what "digging" I can do. Thanks so much for your help. Marty Smith

Hey hun can you send the pic of the medora bridge through the group please?
Or to me. ? I understand exactly hw you feel. Its as an old frind laying there
or just like you said a family member because when I think of those bridges
I remember all my family that traveled those bridges. Its a crying shame. It

We still have 2 bridges here. Shieldstown and Medora. I hope it
does inspire:-) I have photos of Medora up. I have to get a pix of
the Shieldstown one.
The river is up and fast. I know it's being beat up and pulled apart.
I wanted to cry. It was like a member of the family was gone for us
old timers:-(

My husband drove by the Bell's Ford Bridge area today, and tells me that the
bridge is still in the water, parallell to the creek. He says that about half
of the bridge is gone, and the water is almost covering the roof. So sad.
According to pld census records and family histories, some of my
grandmother's family members (LETT and COX) built some of the area bridges, or worked as
millers in the area....Now I wonder if they had anything to do with that bridge
in particular. No way to know now that all of the older members of the family
are gone.
Here's hoping this sad event will inspire folks *everywhere else* to save
their covered bridges while they still can.
I think you might be talking about the Shieldtown Bridge. It is still
standing. I'll try to get out there soon and get a photo. The Bell's
Ford is between Seymour and Cortland. Schneider's nursery is still
there!

Thanks Elizabeth, for this web site. My father was from Jackson County,
Cortland area.
I have a lot of memories of this bridge.
Thanks again

researching
Fergusons, Black, Shipley, Acton,
Is there a long approach of the road before this area? There are stories in
my family of my grandfather Thomas Haines Swaney, driving like a mad man up a
long hill to a bridge on his way to Seymour, from Dayton, Ohio. He was a
colorful character. Linda Swaney Sabin in Greene Co. OH
Oh what a crying shame after rading the tribtown news about the bridge , I just wonder if it can be saved at all now? Every time I go by that eara I just love looking at that wonderful bridge. I went on that bridge when I was a child. I sure hope that they can still do somethuing to save it. Having my fingers crossed for sure. < Ruth

I wewnt out there today. I wanted to cry. Only the tip of the bridge
is above water today. I was unable to stop or photograph the bridge
because there are signs up and under it is all roped off. There were
quite a few trucks and hardhats down there. My fear is that the river
is too high and the bridge being under water is getting pulled apart
by the current and beat to death by debris. It is the saddest thing.
I'm having a crisis :-) about losing history. I have driven across
that bridge myself. Well it has been a few years :^)
