Linda, Are you still reading?
I'm looking for the date of marriage of Letitia Dot Maynard. She may have been married twice, once to Roy Crockett 1920-1923 and later to Ralph W Bevers, after 1923 but before 1927.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Saw you had Briners on your list. My Briners were married to Silences.

Joel,
The oldest 2 Lutheran Churches in or near Brownstown township I believe are Sauers (St. John) Lutheran which is actually in Washington twp, but very close to the B'town twp border, which would be on the eastern side of B'town twp. The other possibility is Wegan Lutheran (St. Paul) which is in the southern area of B' town twp. A good website to check out is this one:
http://www.venne-families.de/Persoenliche%20Webseite.htm
Many of the Lutheran immigrants to the Jackson Co. area came with this group ( my family included). You are correct, they were from the Osnabruck area. You might also want to e-mail Udo Thoerner (e-mail address the the bottom of the page), he is very nice and helpful, and you can write to him in English.
St. Paul Lutheran Church - Wegan

St. John's Lutheran Church - Sauers

Hope this helps. You may e-mail me at cat2397, if you have any more questions.

Most of the immigrants that came from this area in Germany landed at Philadelphia and then went down the Ohio river to Cincy to work for a couple of years before moving elsewhere.
I have not seen a good source for landings in Philadelphia for the 1840/1850 time frame.
Maybe someone on the list knows of a source.

I'm at a roadblock in my research and I'm hoping someone might be familiar with this family. Per family stories my ancestor Lizetta Menke came to the U.S. with her siblings and parents in 1849. Shortly after their arrival both parents died and Lizetta and her younger brother Louis were taken in by their Aunt Rust. Their older sister Elizabeth was taken in by a Lutheran minister and his wife. Louis later served in the Union Army and died while in service. I had no record of where in the U.S. they first settled, only that Elizabeth and Lizetta were in Indianapolis by 1860. I recently found out that they had an older brother Christian who lived for a time in Jackson County, IN and then moved to DuBois County, IN in 1861. As far as I can tell the family consisted of the following:
Mr. Menke
Mrs. Menke
son: Christian Menke (1837-1899) m. Lousa Henke
daughter: Elizabeth Menke (1841-1934) m. Frederick Speier
daughter: Lizetta Menke (1842-1905) m. Carl "Charles" Otto
son: Louis Menke (1845-c1864)
In the 1850 census for Brownstown Twp, Jackson County, IN I found the following family.
Manka, Mary, age 37 born in Germany
Manka, Eliza, age 9, born in Germany
Manka, Louis, age 5, born in Germany
Manka, Mary, age 2, born in Germany
The ages for Elizabeth and Louis match up, although I'm not sure where Christian and Lizetta are. I wasn't aware of a sister Mary, but perhaps she died young.
In 1860 I find no mention of the mother Mary or the daughter Mary. Elizabeth and Lizetta are both in Indianapolis and Christian is in Jackson County, IN. Also, in Brownstown Twp, Jackson County, IN in 1860 is Frederick Rust (age 49) and his wife Louzetta Rust (age 49). This same couple appear in Dubois County, IN in 1870. This is certainly the Aunt Rust mentioned in the family story as she appears in the household of Lizetta Menke and her husband Charles Otto in Indianapolis in 1880. Lizetta Rust died in Indianapolis in 1894.
In checking ships records I've been unable to find the family, so I don't know when exactly they came to the U.S. Per Census entries for Lizetta and Elizabeth it appears they came over in 1849. I think they came from the area around Osnabruck, Germany.
Is anyone familiar with this family? I'm curious if there are any church or civil records that might shed some light on the family in Jackson County. I'm not familiar with Jackson County and would appreciate any guidance.
Thank you,
Joel
Hi Marsha,
I saw your unsubscribe for Jackson co rootsweb list and wanted to help you
ALL rootsweb lists use the same format for subscribing and unsubscribing.
To the list name, add the word "request" then put ONLY the word unsubscribe

So, to get off the INJACKSO list, email a note to
INJACKSO-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
with the word
unsubscribe
in the message box.
DO NOT add your name, do not add ANYTHING else, or it won't work.
Hope this helps,
Sherri

There are many Lutheran churches in Jackson Co. Do you know about where your ancestors lived? This would help to point you to the right church. I think there are 10 or 11 Lutheran churches in Jackson Co. What were your ancestors last names?
