Hi Sherry and group. "Pioneer Pickings" is a book I found at the Allen
County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, IN. It is written by Horace Heffren,
copied by Calara Marie Burns, 130 Bruce Street, Salem, Indiana, Retyped and
Indexed by James E. Bolding 1993. In the forward of the book it states "
Thie articles called "Poineer Pickings" were published in 'The Salem
Democrat' from 1876 to 1881. These articles were copied through the
courtesy of Cecil Smith, Editor of 'The Salem Democrat', who allowed the
copier to use the files of the newspaper. The issues of 'The Salem
Democrat' are bound with two years papers in the same volume and were very
hard to copy from due to the position the book had to be placed in to be
seen by the typist. The newspapers have been microfilmed and are on file in
the Salem Public Library. If verification is needed for any of the article
appearing in this copy of "Pioneer Pickings", one can pbtain this
verification from the mocrofilmed copies at the Library."
These are articles found in the newspaper and mention many of the names that
are mentioned on the list. I unfortunately only wrote down the information
on my family.
I hope this helps the group

Do any Waterbury families appear in Jackson Twp. on the 1870 Jackson Co.

If you have time, could you look up John H. Weaver, b. @1834 with wife Mary?
Also James P. Weaver, b. @1837? They would probably be in or near Salt Creek
or Owen Townships? Thank you for doing these lookups.

Hello,
While in Brownstown, Jackson Co. a few weeks ago, I picked
up a copy of the 1870 Census for Jackson County. I would
like to share this information. Please email me if you
would like for me to do a lookup for you.

I am researching the Carlile/Carlisle families that lived in the Jackson County Indiana community for a time. My line came from Ireland, then to Pennsylvania, Carroll County (Tuscarawas County) Ohio, Jackson and Scott County, Indiana, and some moved on to Iowa and Kansas.
Is there anyone on the list researching these family lines? If so, please contact me. I am specifically looking for records of George Gerome Carlile born about 1852 in Jackson County, Indiana, son of William M. Carlile and Sarah Guthrie. Sarah was supposed to have been born in Jackson County, 1831, and married William Carlile in Jackson County in 1851. I would appreciate help in locating marriage, birth, death, or records of any kind. Thanks.
Dennis,
I am encouraged by all the information you received on this subject. I have
not yet found my g-g-g-grandparents' graves in Jackson County. John McAfee
died in 1821 and his wife Margaret (Peggy) Ewing McAfee died in 1816. If
you happen across them, can you let me know and take pictures? The McAfee's
were pioneers in Jackson County, and John McAfee did early surveys and helped
lay out the town of Vallonia.
Thanks and good luck on finding your relatives!

Hello Margie and STEIN list,
I do not know where my STEIN's come from. I have been told by
information passed down from other family members that my STEIN's came from
Germany.

Just my 2 cents worth. I think that Jackson Co. was formed from Washington
Co., so it probably would be a good idea to look in ALL Washington Co.
records for your families. Those records would probably be in Washington
Co., and not in Jackson Co.
Hope this helps!

Hi Jill
It's been a long time. Still no big breaks on the Sowder family.
Here's just a few possible hints. In 1820 in Washington Co IN there was
a Jesse and John Lucas. Another page over was a Jane Park. In the
marriage records at the Indiana Library is a Jesse Lucas to Elizabeth H.
Sparks, Washington Co, 8/11/1828. Do you suppose that Sparks could have
been Parks?
Several of the families that settled in Jackson Co, first settled in
Washington Co. I know there is a book of will abstracts for Washington
Co. You might want to see if there is any further information on this
Jesse and John Lucas if you can find this book.
In Jackson Co there was a probate for Caleb Lucas, 13 Nov 1832. Have
you checked that out?
Unless your Jesse came to Indiana without his parents, I suggest that
you look at deed records. It was through the Indiana deed records that
I was able to piece my Sowder and Rich families together.
Good Luck.

My ggggrandfather , Jesse Lucas, died in 1848 in Jackson County. Are there
any resources available that might list info about him?
He is referenced in the Jackson County Composite and the History of Jackson
County.
Were there any newspapers that might have his obit?
There is no death certificate for him. I am trying to find his ancestors and
have hit a wall.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Erin,
Thank you so much for the detailed description on what I am looking for. I
guess this is one of the first cemeteries in that area, according to
"Pioneer Pickings". I so very much appreciate you help. So you have
relatives in that cemetery as well. When I go down I will be glad to look
for you and take some photos if you would like.

When you are on Curry road, you will see a water tower and a single fenced
in grave. Park there. There is a path that goes between two people's
properties. The one on your left is well marked for no trespassing, if you
stay on the path you'll be ok. It's kind of a little way down the path. At
one point it looks like the path kind of forks, keep to the right. There is
also a big ant hill in the middle of the path at one point. The cemetary is
hard to see because it is very overgrown. It will be on your right, so keep
an eye out. The first thing that I saw was an overtunred headstone on a
stump about waist high. The rest of the cemetary is to the right of that. I
was just there in early June. Good luck.

Dennis,
I have a Jackson Co. map and it looks as if the Lindley Cemetery is located
on the right side of Curry Rd., heading north. The road is located 9-10
miles west of Brownstown right off U.S. 50. The cemetery seems to be about
1/2 mile north of U.S. 50 on Curry Rd. Hope this helps!
