Sharon:
Thank you so much; this is exactly what I was looking for.
Seems to me that Nancy Stanfield was some relation to the Ruddick's. These
Ruddick's marry
into my SHANNON line.
The James & Rebecca are my gggrandfather's father and his wife, where there
should be several
years difference in their ages.
The James and Eliza are my gggrandparents. Eliza died in 1876; but according
to his CW pension
papers his son states to the Army pension board that his father was married to
Eliza and then to
someone else, and then to Anna Ruminer.
I'm trying to find out who the other woman was, and if there were any more
children. James &
Eliza's 3 youngest children were caught in a tragic house fire that claimed
their lives, in 1877 the
following year after the passing of their mother. The obituary gives their
name as BESS. But doesn't give their given names, or where they are buried.
The oldest child Wm or Billy or Willie
was the only child to escape the fire. It was told that Willie saved the
youngest child, Johnnie, and
he lived for about 2 days, but I still don't know where he is buried at?
For James L. and Nancy Stanfield, 1879 would work on another marriage for
James, since Eliza
died in 1876. I wonder if the "L" wasn't mistranscribed for a "T", they can
look awfully similar?
Thanks for your help. If you find anything else on this family I'd appreciate
you letting me know.
There were other BEST's in the Driftwood area, I wonder if James L. wasn't from
that set of BEST's?
Thanks again.

I am seeking information about James BEST who possibly married Nancy
STANFIELD.. would
anyone have this information?
I saw it while researching in Jackson Co., but I need more than what the
marriage license gives.
I would need both their ages, and the year they married. I didn't know
I might need this when there.
Would anyone be able to retrieve this info for me?
According to my ggreatgrandfather's CW pension paper's, his son (my
great grandfather) stated, that his father had been married 3 times.
I'm only coming up with two marriages, and wondering
if he married this Nancy STANFIELD, and if anyone could find out what
separated them? He
then came to Martin Co., and then to Daviess Co., where he married Anna
Ruminer(Rhuminer).
I would much appreciate any information anyone can dig up on James BEST
from Jackson Co.,
Sincerely,
Melanie Wayman
If you have the time would you mind looking up a few things for me? I'm
looking for Polly DAVIS in Owen township, she may have been living with her
son Pleasant. I'm also looking for her parents Michael and Jane HUGES, and
her brother's family Silas, Parthena, James, and Mary HUGES. Thank you.

Gene,
Thanks for the offer ---there is a thing you could look up for me if you end
up in the courthouse---I had made a note once on a visit about John Lett
being on a delinquent tax list one year. The copy mackine was not working
that day, and I have since lost the note....He was in Seymour as of 1870 (as
you already know) and he died in 1880...It seems to me like the date was
previous to 1870 though....
If you find it, I would love a copy of it again, just to try to establish
where he was living.
Thanks,
Sherri

There are several confusing things about Jackson County, one of which is the
fact that Grassy Cemetery, which is located north of Crothersville and east
of Retreat, is not in Grassy Fork Township, but is in Vernon Township.
Grassy Fork Township is west and south west of Crothersville.
As to Cemeteries in Grassy Fork Township, you should also note that there is
a WASKOM/Pleasant Grove Cemetery which is totally separate from Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery. I've also seen WASKOM/Pleasant Grove Cemetery referred to as Mt.
Freedom, so be cautious about this.
For people researching in Grassy Fork Township, you should note that
depending where you stand in the area, you are very close to both Scott and
Washington Counties. In other words, you might want to check in those
counties for your ancestors also.
The information that I have concerning the Cemeteries, other than personal
knowledge, is taken from the fine books published by the Jackson County
Genealogical Society and are available from them. They have many fine books
available which might be of great help to you.

Dennis Stein, I am nosing in here. In Vernon Township, near Crothersville,
there is a Grassy Fork Cemetery. Do you think this could be the place? Or
is it in the Tampico, Grassy Fort Township area?
Someone mentioned Blanche Daniels, I knew her.
I also have lived in Crothersville for many years.

I'm sorry to say that I couldn't find any DRIVER (by any spelling I could

The DANIELS family you're referring to must be as follows (this is taken from
the 1870 Census for Grassy Fork Township, Jackson County, Indiana, page #363.
(names spelled as in Census)
William DANIEL, age 66, born in Wales, occupation - farmer
Elizabeth DANIEL, age 50, born in Wales, occupation - keeps house
William DANIEL, age 19, born in Kentucky, occupation - works on farm
Jane DANIEL, age 16, born in Indiana, occupation - at home
Bezaleel DANIEL (male) age 11, born in Indiana
Could the above Bezaleel be your Bazil? I would certainly think so,
although this person was born in Indiana. The age would be correct at any
rate.
The following DANIEL folks are buried in Russell Chapel Cemetery located just
south of Tampico, Grassy Fork Township, Jackson County, Indiana.
Section A, Row 19
DANIELS, Edward 1873-1873 (obviously an infant)
DANIELS, Ira 1875-1875 (again another child)
DANIELS, E. Valine 1883-1884 (one more child, not sure what sex)
DANIELS, Julia Ann (wife of W.H.) 1851-28 Feb 1901
DANIELS, William Henry 1850-1918
I would take the above family to be that of the William, age 19, in the 1870
Census.
Section B Row 14
DANIELS, William d. 23 May 1879 (aged 87 years)
DANIELS, Elizabeth (wife of William) d. 29 Dec 1879 (aged 62 years)
Obviously this the William, head of household, of the 1870 Census above. If
you've done much genealogical searching, as I'm sure you have, you'll tend to
disregard the age discrepancy in the Census versus the Grave marker. I've
seen both to be in error so many times, that it's laughable. When they're
this close, they're almost invariably the same person, unless another family
line was living close by. In this case, I see no sign of that.
In a listing for Crothersville Cemetery, Vernon Township, Jackson County
Indiana, the following DANIELs folks are shown -
Row 8 Section A
DANIELS, Blanche E. b. 1909, d. 19--
DANIELS, Lillie G. ("Mother" "Maw") b. 1867, d. 1955
DANIELS, Bez ("Father" "Dad") b. 1859, d. 1923
DANIELS, Addie Belle, w/o Bez, b. 1 Jan 1876, Ownington, KY., d. 24 Feb 1902,
age 26y, 23d.
In the listing for Unmarked Burials for Crothersville Cemetery the following
name is found -
DANIELS, Julia A. (DAVIS) b. 1852, d. 28 feb 1901, married David H. DANIEL
28 Oct 1863. This entry bothers me as it would appear to be the same Julia
DANIELS as shown buried in Russell Chapel Cemetery in Grassy Fork Township.
This information was taken from the Cemetery listings compiled and published
by the Jackson County Genealogy Society, by the way. I've found some other
discrepancies between the Unmarked Burial listing and listings for the other
Cemeteries in the area. I believe that some of the Unmarked Burial list
folks were taken from Funeral Home records rather than Cemetery records.
Anyway, I think that this lady is actually buried in Russell Chapel Cemetery
and is the wife of William DANIELS. Since I don't live far from there and
plan on making a trip over there in the next few weeks, I'll personally look
for the DANIELS graves and let you know what I find.
I'm rather surprised that I don't know more about the DANIELS folks, as I'm
related by marriage or blood to just about everybody in Grassy Fork and
Vernon Townships. ha ha.

mother born CONN. Also in the household are John's daughter Jessie Nora Lett
( age 17) and an Alfred Reynolds as a border.
John H Lett died in July of 1880 and his daughter Jessie married her sister's
brother-in-law in Nov of 1883.
A son of John's, Balaam Lett, is found on p 144 of the 1870 census of
Jackson co---but I do not have 1870 census listings for John Lett's other
children:
Emily m Phillip COX Sept 1865
Martha m George McCARTER April 1864
William (no additional info---last found on 1860 census with family, age 8)
Margaret Alice m William CROSS April 1874
Sarah Belle m James MILLS Mar 1879
I have never found any additional information on Mollie Driver Lett---and
wonder what became of her after her husband died.
I am also looking for any data on a Hirum LOVE, who performed the marriage of
Jessie Lett to William Franklin COX in 1883 at Chestnut Ridge, Jackson co, IN.
Any help is appreciated !
Thanks,
Sherri

Grassy Fork Township is indeed near Crothersville. It is to the west and
southwest with the major town being Tampico. What names are you looking for?
I have the Cemetery listing book for Grassy Fork Township, and the 1870
Census transcription for all of Jackson County and would be happy to check
for you. I have a few maps taken from the Cemetery book, but they are very
poor quality. I'd try to scan one or two and send them to you, but doubt if
that would be successful.

Dennis,
Crothersville is actually in Vernon Township. Do you know the name of the
cemetery that your ancestors were buried? I have a map of Jackson county
that shows the townships and cemeteries, maybe I can help you.
