Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thank you for the list of churches in Jackson Co., but is there anyway, you
could post the date
they were established? This might just help some of us, to narrow down our
searches. Please?

Good Evening
I just received the Military record for my gr-gr-grandfather, George W. Staton. He served in the Civil War with the Co. C, 10th Indiana Cavalry. His home is listed as Vernon Township, Jackson County, Indiana...Congressional District 3.
Where and what can I find out about Vernon Township? Is that where Retreat is? What records are available for this area?
Hope someone can help me. Thanks
Alice
There are two cemeteries west of Cortland. The first is about 0.6
of a mile west on the south side of hwy 258. The second is
about 0.5 mile farther west on the north side of the road.
If you reach the curve to the right
you have gone too far.
There are also three small cemeteries located 3/4 mile
south of Cortland lying approx. 0.5 miles west for the first one,
the second is about 1.2 miles west and the third is 1.5 miles west
of 400E Pike. The first two are in fields and the third is
on the west side of an old road bed. All three lie between
the gravel roads 550N and 600N.
Regards, Ken Clark

Hello
I am trying to find were someone would be buried if they died in Cortland .
Does anyone know the name of churches in the city in 1880 ? My gg-
grandfather died somewhere between 1877 and 1880 William Smith born in VA .
1880 census show his wife Jane nee Davis widow her mother next door Mary J.
DAVIS was also a widow. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.
I have been told Jennie nee Davis SMITH married an Lewis after William's
death. Thanks so much Rose
Hello, all.
Since there were no birth records kept when my g-grandfather (John RILEY)
would have been born in Seymour, I want to try to find a baptismal
record. http://www.seymour.org/Worship/church.htm has a positively huge
list of churches...Could some of you help me figure out which churches, if
any, would have records going back as far as 1879-1880?
Thank you so much.
Laurie.
In the 1870 census for Brownstown, Jackson County, Indiana a Jane SUMMA
is listed and next door is Jas A HOUSE with wife Ebelina and a couple
children. In 1862 James HOUSE married Sophia E. STARKS who according to
earlier census records was shown in the household of parents SUMMA.
Does anyone know if Ebelina is the middle name of Sophia, or if James
married twice within that 8 year period. Or does anyone have any
information on these persons. I have not found any death record for
Jane SUMMA and she was in the 1870 census and I don't think I have seen
an 1880 census yet. Any help on these persons would be deeply
appreciated.
Thank you.

It sounds like there were quite a few Mary Jane Davises in Jackson Co. It
must have been a popular name. My Mary Jane was born in IN, but her mother
and her paternal grandparents all came from KY. I am also looking for info
on a James Davis (or his wife Elizabeth)born 3/17/1797 in KY, died
12/28/1874 and is burried in Clearspring. His headstone says that he fought
in the was or 1812. I have a lot of info on them forward, but not too much
on where they came from and such.

Sorry - I meant to ask if someone had access to info on whether or not the
people
listed below had made a Will and what the Book and/or page # would be so I
could send for them. Who would I ask or where would I write to, to find if
Solomon/Catherine
(Walters) MOORE and/or Samuel Larwood B./Lucinda (Cordell) MOORE in the
1800's in
Jackson Co. IN.? Also what the cost would be for copies. Thanks -

Maxine has a good point - don't just look at the census. I found my
gr-gr-grandparents after 16 years just by paging through civil court records
looking at everything with a similar name at the courthouse in Brownstown.

Rose,
Sometimes people just look in the index books and sometimes they missed
names in the index books.
I wouls check a lib close and see if there is a 1870 Ind census there and
check it. yourself. I have done this several times and found mine. Also
see if Ind has any STATE CENSUSes, or Civil War person's census and check
those. Also ask for a look up in Jackson Co Books with biographies in them,
like a centenial book or a certain book they did for a special yr.
Your names are common so they will be harder to find. I found my 2nd gr
grmother mar to her 2nd spouce, by a nick name in adjoining county and had
looked for 15 yrs + for it.
Cassandra French Davis mar William 1st then Apr 1818 she as KEZIAH Davis
amr Moses Brannan in Franklin Ci Ind when they lived in Dearborn Co.. This
marriag record was on the net from Ind and I just used last names and found
it. I didn't go to a county just the Mar list from Ind on Net.
Have you checked it???
