I understand that the Library and/or the Indiana Room do not answer email inquiries.
That's what I gather from their web site. I am trying to determine which house
Christian Ahlschwede built. Sources conflict. The house at West Park and Polk was built by
Chief LaFontaine. I know the Ahlscchwedes owned it and lived in it for years. I know
Christian bought "4 lots" at West Park and Polk. Christian's son wrote in a
letter that Christian built a stone house on West Park after marrying in 1855 and that
that house later became the Kiltey Funeral Home. I can't figure out, from the sources
I have, if there was one house or if there were two. If the Chief LaFontaine House was the
same house as that referred to as being built by Christian Ahlschwede, then who built the
house for LaFontaine who, I understand, died in 1847. Christian's son wrote that the
house was bought in 1866 by Christian's nephew, Friedrich Ahlschwede, who lived with
him. Confusion reigns 5,000 miles away.
