Useful Life is Ended.
Joseph Stuart Dies at his Home in Belleville.
Active in Church Work.
Had Owned and Operated a Number of Flouring Mills.
A useful life was closed Saturday morning when Joseph Stuart the venerable miller at
Belleville died at his home three miles north west of this city. He had not been sick
long and those about him during his last illness say that his suffering was not great.
His brother, Henry Stuart, died a few weeks ago and since that time Joseph Stuart has
failed rapidly.
Joseph Stuart was born in Preble county, Ohio, June 4, 1827, and died April 16, 1904, aged
76 years, 10 months and 12 days. When he was ten years old his parents moved to Indiana
and settled in Jefferson township, within forty roods from the spot where, sixty seven
years later, his death occurred.
Fifty-two years ago he entered into partnership with James Taylor and the firm engaged in
milling business and built and operated a number of flouring mills in various parts of
this state. They build the Arnold & Thomas mill at Huntington and the mill at
Belleville of which the deceased was owner at the time of his death. After the death of
Mr. Taylor, Stuart continued in the business alone. He was well fitted for his trade and
successfully operated a mill at Pipe Creek in Cass county and another at Peoria, Miami
county. Selling out the last named he returned to Huntington county and bought the mill
at Belleville which he repaired and for the past twenty-one years has operated.
Mr. Stuart was made a member of the Masonic order at New Waverly, Cass county and was a
charter member the lodge at that place. After moving to this county he brought his demit
to Warren and has always lived a worthy and creditable member of the order. His labors in
behalf of the Christian church are also worthy of notice. He united with the church in
Cass county and afterwards moved his membership to Belleville, being a charter member of
the church at both places and at each place serving upon building ? (rest of article
