George Jacobs
_________
Funeral services for George Jacobs, 78, who ended his life Friday by shooting himself in
the abdomen with a sawed-off shotgun in the barn at his home, Walnut and Ash Streets,
route eight, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of the Bailey Mortuary with
the Rev. Ivan R. Woods, pastor of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church
officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Cemetery.
Jacob's body was found at about 3:30 p.m. Friday by Louis Weisjahn when he went to the
Jacobs home to see how the latter was getting along. Weisjahn had lived with Jacobs for
five years prior to December, 1952, and had been going to se Jacobs each day. The latter
was reported despondent from ill health and the necessity of finding other quarters.
Dr. G. M. Nile County Coroner, found the shotgun had been placed on a table, the butt
against the side of the barn, and fired into Jacob's abdomen. In the house officers
found a note directing that $93 cash be returned to the welfare department and his clean
clothes given to the Salvation Army. Welfare officials said the money probably would be
used for funeral expenses.
Jacobs was born February 7, 1874 in Huntington to Henry and Louisa Lauderman Jacobs, and
had lived for more than 50 years in the neighborhood where he died, first with his parents
and afterwards with other members of the family. He was employed in various capacities in
the city.
Mr. Jacobs never married, Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Sarah Simons, and a brother, Harmon
Jacobs, both of this city, three sisters, Mrs. Amanda Horn, Miss Louisa K Jacobs and Mrs.
Mary I. Ryan, and four brothers, Henry A., Peter, Charles and Samuel E. Jacobs, preceded
him in death. The body was taken to the Bailey Mortuary where friends may call.
