I have a newspaper article from Huntington Herald Press, written about 1944 by Samuel A.
Lahr, that wrote of the Charles/Lahr family. If you haven't already found this, the
following is the relevant excerpt (my copy was incomplete):
(G) Barbara Lahr was born October 20, 1850. She was two years old when her parents left
Stetten for Clear Creek township. On February 16, 1867, she married Samuel Runkle of
Warren township. Mr. Runkle was born February 15, 1843 in Perry county, Ohio. He was
nine years old when his parents came to Warren township, Huntington county. Mr. Runkle is
a brother to Sarah and Katherine Runkle previously mentioned in this article. Their two
daughters (a) Mary and (b) Flora were born while Mr. and Mrs. Runkle lived near Bippus.
Mr. Runkle died February 5, 1870, and his remains were buried in Clear Creek cemetery.
Three years later the widow married Eli Charles. Mr. Charles was born in Huntington
county April 22, 1851. When he was a boy in his 'teens he used to herd cattle over
the plain on which Colorado Springs was built later. The Indians took a fancy to the boy
for his dark complexion, grey eyes and long straight black hair.
The Charles family and the two step-daughters left Bippus for Smith Center, Kansas in
1881 and during March 1915, the aged couple left for Colorado Springs, a flourishing city
of 40,000 people. To this union seven children were born, (c) Eva, (d) Almeda, (e)
Charles, (f) Oscar, (g) Homer, (h) Jessie, (i) and Elva. Homer died during his infancy,
Mr. Charles died April 17, 1927, and Mrs. Charles died December 26, 1928.
Mary C. Runkle was born January 1, 1868 near Bippus. She had a common school training
and two years in college. She taught school eight years before she married Jay W.
Falkinburg, August 1, 1894. Mr. Falkinburg was born in Montezuma, Iowa, December 20,
1859. Mr. and Mrs. Falkinburg were engaged in the grocery business in Lebanon, Kan.
Their two children are Isla and Della.
Mrs. Falkinburg died April 1, 1930 and Mr. Falkinburg died April 10, 1933. Their remains
were buried at Lebanon. Isla married R.C. McCammon and he is in photographic business at
Smith Center, Kan. Della is unmarried and a teacher in the Smith Center public schools.
Flora A. Runkle was born December 22, 1869 near Bippus. On February 21, 1889 she married
Andrew Lull at Lebanon, Kan. Mr. Lull was born April 21, 1866 in Gage county, Neb. Their
two children are Floyd and Estel. Both of these received training in college and have
taught school. Estel specialized in music. The Lull family left Lebanon for Smith Center
where they took charge of the Smith County State bank. The father, two children and the
grandchildren have positions in the bank. C.W. Diehl, a grandson, is cashier.
The children from the Charles family are engaged in farming. Eva married Ransom Babcock
and they live in Hoxie, Kan. Almeda married John Woods, and they _____ at Lebanon, Kan.
