Message Board Post:
I am looking for positive identification of the "Susanna Smith wife of James"
buried in the Monument City Cemetery in Huntington County in June 18,1872.
I have been looking for Susanna Smith wife of James Smith from Allen County. James is
buried in Nine Mile United Methodist Church Cemetery but it does not appear that Susanna
is buried there from the church burial records even though her name is on the tombstone. I
am looking to see if I can positvely identify the Susanna Smith buried at the Monument
City Cemetery.
My Susanna Smith was Susanna Overly who married James Smith in Darke County Ohio in 1830.
Family moved to the Nile Mile Indiana area between 1843 and 1847. Susanna was alive and
listed as the widow of James Smith in 1870 census in Allen County, living with a son
Joseph and his wife Catherine and twin sons but not in the 1880 census in Allen County or
surrounding counties.
There are 6 Smith plots filled in the Nine Mile Cemetery with the remains of James and 5
children who died between the 1850's and 1868. Do not know why Susanna would have
been buried elsewhere unless they ran out of family plots. I do not know of family member
who may have lived in the Huntington County area of this cemetery in 1872.
Any information would be appreciated.
Janet Smith
