Hi,
I have the book "Life In A Three Ring Circus" by Sharon Smith and Stephen
Fletcher. It has a large 5 page story called "Hoosier Safari" about Modoc
the elephant leads authorities on a merry chase along the banks of the
Wabash.
The elephant chase started on Nov 11/12, 1942 and was on the run for 4 days.
It was caught near Mt. Etna, Huntington County on the Krieg farm.
Kenneth A. Kindley filed a law suit against Terrell Jacobs, owner of Modoc.
$25,000.00 for injuries suffered when trambled by the animal.
Newspaper Articles:
Kokomo Tribune, Nov. 13 1942 & Nov. 17, 1942
Chicago Sun, Nov 15, 1942
Peru Republican, Nov. 20 1942 & Mar 02, 1943 & 7 Sep, 1944.
Logansport Press, Jan 6, 1945
I am sure that there were many articles in the Huntington newspapers too.
Hope you can get this book at your library. If you want any more details
just let me know.

Subject: [INHUNT] Mad Circus Elephant in Mt. Etna
I remember my dad telling me the story about a circus elephant that had gone
mad and got loose and ended up in the Lancaster/Mt. Etna area, encluding the
family farm and the neighbor house across the road. My Aunt just confirmed
the story, and that Mr. McKinley was permanently injured by the elephant
when he tried to shoot it to stop it. My Aunt said she was young, Uncle Tom
was working out in the field when the story first came out about the
elephant, but dad remembered the events, so I would say that it happened mid
1940s to 1950. The elephant was on the loose for several days.
Does anyone remember this event, know when it happened? I would like to know
what articles would of been in the paper about it.
