Death of Mrs. E.H. Smethurst
One of the Most Prominent Church Workers in the City.
About seven o'clock on Thursday morning Mrs. Edward R.Smethurst died at her home on
First street after being afflicted for more than a ear with paralysis.
The deceased was a daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Good and was born near Thornville, Perry
county, Ohio, September 16, 1836. When she was about ten years old her parents came to
Indiana and settled in Salamonie township.
On October 16, 1853, she was married to Alison G. Irwin. To them was born one son. Mr.
Irwin died in August 1854. Eight years later his widow was married to Edward R.
Smethurst. To them were born four children--Emma and Nellie both of whom are deceased,
and George and Roscoe, who are still living.
Over thirty years ago Mr. Smethurst united with the Christian church and was one of the
most prominent members of that congregation. She gave liberally of her time and means and
being a natural leader was always looked to carry on the work which usually falls to the
share of the ladies of the church. For the past few years she has not been permitted to
take an active part in church work on account of her infirmaties.
She was always held in highest regard by those who knew her and her death is mourned by an
unusually large circle of friends.
The funeral will be held from the Christian church Sunday morning at ten o'clock. The
services will be conducted by Rev. J.E. Etter. The burial will be in the Masonic
cemetery.
