BOARDMAN, Ohio - Carolyn Lauer Kukura, 70, died early Tuesday morning at
Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 2, 1940, in Huntington, Indiana, a daughter of Claude F.
and June E. Ade Lauer.
Carolyn was a teacher with the Boardman, Ohio school system for 30 years,
retiring in 1994. She began her teaching career in 1964 at Stadium Drive
Elementary School, teaching 1st grade and then 4th grade and eventually
7th grade at Boardman Center Middle School as a language arts teacher,
where she was also the language arts coordinator for 18 years.
She received her bachelor's degree in Education from Youngstown State
University, where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and then
a master's degree in Education from Westminster College and a master's
degree in Supervision from Kent State University.
Carolyn was a member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, a
member and past president of the Youngstown National Panhellenic Society,
that involved education for area seniors, a member, past president and
secretary of the Boardman Education Association, a member of the Mahoning
Retired Teachers Association, and a member and past president of the
International Readers Association.
She was also very active on the Womens Committee for children's concerts
with the Youngstown Symphony and the Y.S.U. English Festival. She was an
active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Carolyn was also a member of the Red Hat Society, the P.E.O., the
Youngstown Symphony Guild, the Junior League of Youngstown, the Boardman
Kiwanis Club, the Saxon Club Branch 22, Fortnightly 111, the Boardman
Bicentennial Committee and the Thursday-Nine Millcreek Golf League.
She had also been a recipient of the Y.W.C.A "Woman of the Year " award.
Her husband, Richard, whom she married June 11, 1999, died Dec. 31, 1999.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Deborah Mayaan of Tuscon, Ariz. and
her brothers, Robert A. (Penny S.) Lauer of Naples, Fla. and David C.
(Georgia E.) Lauer of Boardman, Ohio.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Anstrom-Velker Funeral
Home, 75 E. Midlothian Blvd. and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the
church, prior to the service.
There will be services at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Westminster Presbyterian
Church
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Carolyn's name, may be given to the
American Cancer Society, 1-800-227-2345.
