James Stewart b. 1784-d. 8/25/1838
m. Martha Oberholt b. 1795-d. 10/26/1872
James was born in Mercedes Aberdeen Scotland. Came to America settling in Canton, Ohio;
later moved to Preble County, Ohio. He was a bell maker and blacksmith by trade. The
family came to Huntington County, Indiana on October 12, 1837, settling on the bank of the
Salamonia River about four miles northwest of Warren, Indiana. It is said that by his
trade this place was named Belleville, Indiana. He lived there only ten months and was the
first white settler to die in Jefferson Township, Huntington County. His grave is in the
Good Cemetary just south of State Road 218 east edge of Warren, Indiana.
Martha (Oberholt) Stuart, his wife, was born in Virginia, the daughter of David (d.
9/5/1850) and wife Elizabeth Oberholt (d. 6/13/1835).
Martha, with her parents came to Ohio about the year 1810. Tradition has it she came from
Scranton, Pennsylvania to Canton, Ohio by ox team. Here she met and married James Stuart.
She died of typhoid fever and palsy and is buried in the Pipe Creek Cemetary, Cass County,
Indiana.
