Hello List and List Readers:
Does anyone in your part of the world have access to Huntington County census
index for years 1880-1920, or perhaps a city directory for the early 1900s?
I am running out of ideas and getting frustrated in trying to locate my
great-grandfather who lived in Huntington, IN in 1903, and his wife's name
was Mary _____? (according to a copy of a deed I have). He was born in
Somerset County, PA around 1854, and left the state when my unmarried
g-grandmother became pregnant with my grandfather, who was born in 1875.
Family tradition says he married a Mary Unknown and had no other children.
His name was FRANK CABLE. Here in Louisiana where I now live there are no
census indexes for Indiana more recent than 1850. I did find a BENJAMIN
CABLE living in Huntington in the 1910 census but it took me most of the day
to find it and I'm not sure it's him. He did have brothers named "George
W.", and one named "Lincoln," so I'm not sure if his name was really
"Benjamin Franklin Cable." The 1860 PA census lists him as
"Franklin."
There are a number of coincidences that lead me to think this Benjamin may be
him:
1. He was born in 1854, in PA (but 1910 census show parents born in Germany,
rather than in PA where they were born (would he lie or could it be error on
the part of the enumerator?)
2. His wife was listed as "MARY", with no deceased or living children. (True
according to family tradition.)
I have no idea when or where he married (Mary born in OH, her parents born in
PA). Also living in household was Abraham Coy, listed as father-in-law, to
head of household, born 1824 in PA, as were his parents. I also have no idea
when or where this Benjamin (or Frank) died, and since I am totally
unfamiliar with the city or county, (except Huntington is Dan Quale's
hometown) I don't know where to search - for cemeteries, marriage records,
etc., and I'm sure I would have to have his date of death in order to request
a death certificate. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I would
gladly search census records myself if I had an idea where to look and Baton
Rouge is the closest city to have census records if not the indexes. I
believe this Benajmin lived on Frederichs Street according to the 1910 census.
Sorry to make this so long, and please excuse my frustration, but I have
previous generations from the immigrant ancestor to Frank Cable, (4
generations) and every one of his descendants, and since I am probably the
only person in the world looking for him, I don't know where else to turn. He
holds the elusive key to tie it all together. (I 'm working on a family
history for our family reunion due in PA next month, I hate to leave him out,
with little or no information on him.)
Thanking you in advance for any suggestions,
