Okay, I was thumbing through the 1887 Huntington County IN History book, and found two
different entries on Friends Meetings there.
page 603-4 Dallas Township
"The Religious History of Dallas dates from a very early day, and among the
denominations first represented was that of the Friends or Quakers, a society of which was
organized in the northern part of the township, prior to 1844. 'John MOORE, the
founder of the "Friends' Meeting" was one of the early pioneers, and was
principally instrumental in securing the settlement of a considerable portion of the
township by members of that society in an early day.' 'He was a native of North
Carolina and moved to Wayne County, Indiana, in 1828, and from thence to this township
about the year 1838.' 'He died in 1872, aged nearly eighty-four years." The
society thus orgainized soon became quite strong in numbers and influence and in 1844 a
house of worship, the first in the township, was erected on land donated by Mr. MOORE.
The organization is still kept up, but owing to deaths and removals is not so prosperous
as formerly. After the organization of the Friends Church other religious
societies were established by the United Brethern: Lutheran, Methodist, Christian abd
German Baptist denominations, the last three of which have flourishing churches in
Andrews......"
Now, this says the Friends meeting was in the northern part of Dallas Twp., Andrews which
use to be known as Antioch (page 605) is in the southern part of the Twp, that book I was
looking at wrote that Antioch Friends meeting was ?Huntington Co? which it could be the
same church or maybe not, certainly will work on this one. When I go to the court house
and library next week, hopefully I can get a copy the area plot map for 1845-1872 to see
where John Moore lived, this maybe a good lead on this church. Now, jsut because there
was no meeting house until 1844 or organizing of a monthly meeting doesn't mean that
they were not meeting over the 15 to 20 years before, in each other's homes, which was
the old way.
same book, page 673-674 Jefferson Twp
"....At the village of Pleasant Plains is a society of the Friends Church, which has
a substantial membership. A house of worship costing $1,000 was erected in 1870, and the
society is reported in a fairly prosperous condition. Among the preaschers have been:
Susan RATLIFF, Mrs. BOGUR, and others. All the church organizations in the township have
accomplished much good in their respective communities, and the 'high moral tone of
the citizens of the township indicates the refining influence exerted by religious
instruction.'"
this church was mentioned in that book I wrote from the other night.
