I am researching the Hockensmith family and with Don’s helpful data was able to identify
Dewey Hockensmith. There are some indications that Dewey married after the 1930 census
and did have a family but I don’t have much detail on them. What I do have is a lot of
information on the Hockensmith ancestors and will summarize that here.
As has been noted in another message, Dewey Clinton Hockensmith was a son of Charles Henry
Hockensmith, b.4 Aug 1867, IN and Elizabeth? b. ca Jul 1877 in OH. Charles was a son of
Levi Hockensmith b. 1837, Stark Co. OH, d.18 Mar 1870 and Mary Virginia Bechtol, b 22 Sept
1841 in Morgan Co, (then) VA, d.22 Jan 1919 in Wabash Co. IN. They were married 21 August
1861 in Wabash Co.
Levi was a son of Jacob Hockensmith b.10 October 1803 in (probably) Mifflin Co, PA d.
before Apr 1850 in Stark Co., OH and Julian Smith. They were married 7 March 1833 in Stark
Co, OH.
Jacob was a son of Peter Hockensmith b. ca 1774, Frederick Co, MD and Christiana Smith b.
ca 1774. Christina was a daughter of John Smith who died 1807 in Bedford Co, PA and Mary
Templeton (?) who died ca August 1832 in Stark Co, Ohio.
Peter Hockensmith was a son of Jacob Hockensmith b. ca 1750 in (probably) Frederick Co,
MD, died August 1818 in Frederick Co. and Elizabeth Smith b. ca 1750 d. ca 26 June 1834
Carroll Co, MD. Elizabeth was a daughter of George Smith d. 1793 Frederick Co, MD and
Christina?.
Jacob was a son of Conrad Hockensmith b. circa 1720 in Europe who immigrated to America in
1739 and died in Frederick Co, MD in 1795.
There are indications that Conrad was in the French and Indian War. Jacob a member of the
Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War.
I have lots of information to share and would welcome contact with anyone descended from,
or researching, any of the individuals mentioned above.
