John F. Spahr Jr., M.D., 91, Peru, died Sunday (May 21, 2006) at the Bloomington (Ind.)
Hospital.
Dr. Spahr earned a bachelor of science degree from Purdue University in 1936 and a medical
degree from Indiana University in 1940. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and Nu Sigma
Nu medical fraternities. In 1992, he and his wife moved from Indianapolis to Peru, where
they became members of the First Christian Church.
After completing a medical residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Indiana University
Medical Center in Indianapolis, Dr. Spahr opened a private medical practice in
Indianapolis in 1944. He also served as attending physician at clinics at Indiana
University Medical Center and at Marion County General Hospital in Indianapolis. He
retired from practicing medicine in 1983.
Dr. Spahr was born Aug. 31, 1914, in Huntington, to John F. Spahr Sr. and Elsie May Allen
Spahr. He married Marian A. Roberts on May 4, 1941. His wife died Oct. 10, 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Dunfee and Susan Thomas; a son, Robert Spahr;
and 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A son, John Spahr III, preceded him in death.
Calling is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, with calling one hour prior to the
service, at the First Christian Church, 53 W. Main St., Peru. Pastor George McCarty will
officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Peru.
Preferred memorials are to the Auer Hall Organ Project at the Indiana University Jacobs
School of Music, Bloomington, or to the Indiana University School of Medicine, both in
care of Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, IN 46970.
