Here's some threads to follow...
In 1788 James Ruse came to Australia as a convict from Cornwall in England as part of the
first fleet to settle Australia.
In 1790 he married an Elizabeth Perry herself a convict...
James Ruse proved himself very industrious in that he was the first successful wheat
farmer in Australia (The Settlement was starving.. living hand to mouth as the supply
ships from England were suffering at the hands of nature at sea... many did not arrive.)
He is known as the "father of agriculture" in Australia. Universities, suburbs,
roads and parks are named after him......
Now... he had two children to his first wife in England, then a further eight (industrious
lad) children to Elizabeth Perry in Australia (called New South Wales then) when these
children were adults the opening of America and the gold rushes in America and Australia
would have been in full swing, so it's possible that his children from both marriages
could have found their way to America. Apparently there was prolific ship trade between
Australia and America. During your Civil war there were records of both Union and
Confederate ships being at anchor in Port Philip Bay Melbourne Australia.
It was suspected from researchers into the Ruse name in Australia that James Ruses
brother, travelled on ships a bit, and James's son "James" born in Australia
didn't die in Australia....... Maybe America?
Please let me know what you find.....
Regards,
Peter Ruse.
