I have researched this family a bit because I am related by marriage. Florence James
(granddaughter), listed with Daniel and Mary in 1880 census in Polk Twp. Huntington Co,
IN, along with Helen, Lewis and Willis, adult children of Daniel and Mary. I assume that
Willis was the father of Florence, as he is listed as widowed. If I have the right
family, Florence is the one who later married Phil Farren, who was well know in Columbia
City as the band director at Col. City HS. Any details about the family, or scanned
photos, would be priceless. I believe I've located Daniel in the 1830, 1840 and 1850
census, but haven't got my data compiled. I'd love to learn more about the
family. As far as rumors about being related to Jesse James, the outlaw, I did a little
digging a while back. I don't recall the details, but it didn't seem from his
parents origins (in 1880 census?) that he could be related.
The 1850 census for Green's Fork Twp, Randolph Co., IN, lists a Daniel James, and the
1850 census lists all children as born Indiana, as follows:
28, Daniel James, 50, M, , Farmer, 1500, North Carolina
29, Mary James, 43, F,,, North Carolina
30, John James, 22, M,,, Indiana
31, Martin James, 20, M,,,Indiana
32, David James, 18, M,,,Indiana
33, Elisa James, 16, F,,, Indiana
34, Hellen James, 14, F,,,Indiana
35, Willis James, 12, M,,,Indiana
36, Henley James, 10, M,,, Indiana
37, Allen James, 7, M,,, Indiana
38, Raiford James, 5, M,,, Indiana
39, Lewis C. James, 6/12, M,,, Indiana
Do I have the right family? Any information will be appreciated.
