Richard E. "Rich" Woods, 69, Markle, died at 3:32 p.m. Monday (April 24, 2006)
from a heart attack while piloting his aircraft in Huntington County.
Mr. Woods was a member of the Markle United Methodist Church, where he served for over 40
years as a Sunday School teacher and a lay witness missionary. His hobbies and passions
included education, woodworking, gardening, music, art, and flying. He was an avid pilot
and built and flew his own sport-utility aircraft.
He was a 1954 graduate of Springfield High School in Springfield, Ohio. He earned a
bachelor's degree in industrial design and engineering from the University of
Cincinnati in 1959.
He was an inventor and entrepreneur with over 50 patents to his credit. He served as a
contract teacher of electronics and robotics at Norwell High School for 13 years and was
also a guest lecturer at the University of Cincinnati.
He founded and led the not-for-profit organization Alternate Energy Educational Program
(AEEP) since the early 1980s.
Mr. Woods was born Oct. 4, 1936, in Springfield, Ohio, to Charles Larkin and Goldie Ann
Hiney Woods. He married Kathleen "Kay" Kreider on June 27, 1958, in Springfield,
Ohio, and his wife survives in Markle.
Other survivors include a son, Kipp Woods of Huntington; three daughters, Jannette
Reynolds of Cary, N.C., Cheryl Yager of Huntertown, and Rachelle Sherer of Huntingburg; a
brother, Chuck Woods of Dayton, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren.
Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Markle United Methodist Church fellowship hall,
145 W. Morse St., Markle. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m.
Friday at the church, with Rev. Kaye Patton and Rev. Tim Dilley officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Markle
United Methodist Church or to the Richard Woods' Grandchildren's Education Fund,
both in care of Myers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 403, Markle, IN 46770.
