Paul "Dick" Baumgardner, 81, Huntington, died Wednesday (April 26, 2006) at
Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Baumgardner was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon
and trustee. A 1949 graduate of the Indiana School of Mortuary Science, he was a licensed
embalmer and had been associated with the Lynch Funeral Home in Roanoke. He had also
worked as a purchasing agent for E-Systems, Memcor Division.
Mr. Baumgardner served in the Army during World War II and was a 1945 Purple Heart
recipient. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, where he served as past
Post Commander and past District Commander. He was also a member of American Legion Post
160, Roanoke; Disabled American Veterans; and AMVETS Post 0008. He was a retired
lieutenant colonel in the National Guard and served as treasurer of the Huntington County
Veterans Council.
Mr. Baumgardner was instrumental in a variety of civic affairs in Huntington County
including the VFW Street Fair and Huntington's Fourth of July celebrations. For many
years he organized parades for various events in Huntington.
He was born April 20, 1925 in Huntington, to Earl and Mae Young Baumgardner. He was a 1944
graduate of Huntington High School. He married Betty Smith July 21, 1946. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Vickie Swain, Roanoke, and Debra Vodde, Troy, Ohio; four
grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and seven
stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Baumgardner, and an infant sister.
Calling is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, with calling one hour prior to the
service, at the First Presbyterian Church, 50 E. Tipton St. Rev. John Ritchie will
officiate.
Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
Preferred memorials are to Cancer Services for Huntington County or the First Presbyterian
