Victor Eldon Stech, 94, North Manchester, died at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday (April 25, 2006) at
Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.
Mr. Stech graduated from Lancaster High School in 1929 and was admitted to Indiana Central
College in Indianapolis. He taught social studies and coached basketball.
He earned his master's degree from Indiana University with a master's thesis
titled, "The History of Huntington County." He began his teaching and coaching
career at Banquo High School in Huntington County, where he taught from 1934 to 1935. He
then taught high school in LaGrange, Ossian, and Goshen.
He finished his career in the Fort Wayne school system for 33 years.
He served in the Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945 as a pharmacist's mate, or
medic.
Mr. Stech was a member of the North Manchester United Methodist Church and had been a
member of the South Wayne United Methodist Church in Fort Wayne. He also held memberships
at the American Legion Post 47 in Fort Wayne, the Indiana Schoolmens Club, the Fort Wayne
Retired Teachers Association, and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
He enjoyed flowers and spent 33 summers as a gardener at Foster Park in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Stech was born Sept. 16, 1911, in Huntington to Benjamin Franklin and Mary Laura
Butler Stech. His parents were deaf-mutes who met at the Indiana School for the Deaf, and
he learned American sign language before his older sister taught him to speak.
He married Dorothy LaRae Young of North Manchester on Oct. 25, 1939, in LaGrange. She died
on March 3, 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Kay Hawley of Samaria, Mich.; and three grandsons.
Calling is from 3-5 p.m. Friday at Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 N. East St., North Manchester,
and one hour prior to services, which will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at
Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, 207 W. Main St., North Manchester.
