Fatal Accident to George Carl.
About 12 o'clock Tuesday night George Carl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. Carl, met with
an accident which terminated in his death at noon the next day. The very sad and
distressing affair occurred while the young man was at work in an oil-well derrick on the
James H. Lieurance farm, four miles east of town. There were two other men engaged in
drilling at the time, and Carl was learning to dress tools. He and the driller, Mr. Parr,
were about to raise the drill for the last time before finishing their tower and coming
home. Carl mounted the bull-wheel to start it, and Parr turned on the steam. Just then
Carl slepped and fell across the bull-rope which carried him between it and the wheel.
Parr saw him fall and instantly reversed the engine, but it was too late. Carl was
terribly pinched above the hips, and he exclaimed, "I am a dead man." Parr and
the young man, Ray, carried him to Jacob Hoover's house, near by, and the parents and
Dr. Sprowl were sent for. He was perf!
ectly conscious all the time, and was able to be brought home the next morning.
Everything possible was done to save his life, but all to no avail, and a few minutes
after noon he passed away. His age was twenty-three years, two months and twenty-one
days.
The grief of the parents, especially the mother, is very great, and the whole town and
community are shocked by the terrible fate of the young man whom all knew so favorably and
well.
Funeral services will be held at the house tomorrow aftenoon at 1 o'clock and
interment in Woodlawn cemetery.
