Death of Rev. James Atchison.
From the Columbia City Weekly Mail the following notice of the death
of Rev. James Atchison, an old and well known minister of the Christian church is taken:
"Rev. James Atchison, of Pierceton, died last Friday at 11:10 a.m., aged 81
years. Funeral services were held at the Boonville church Sunday at 11 a.m., Rev. J Hidy
of North Manchester, officating, assisted by Rev. Peter Winebrenner. Interment in
Boonville cemetery. Rev. Atchison was one of the oldest ministers in Northern Indiana,
having served fifty-two years in the ministry, and during that time he only missed
attending annual conference twice. "Uncle Jimmie," as he was sometimes called,
was an old pioneer preacher of the Christian denomination, well known and was a welcome
guest where ever he went. The funeral was in charge of the Pierceton Lodge, No. 256,
I.O.O.F., of which he was a member."
Rev. Atchison was well known at Warren, and he had many warm friends here. He was one
among the first preachers that visited the place. At first he was accompanied by Rev.
Silas Sparks, and he preached in Samuel Jones' barn, in the old school house, and
afterwards in the church that was built. He was pastor of the Christian church here about
twelve years ago and was regarded by everybody as an excellent Christian man.
