The Warren Republican, Thursday, July 25, 1901
Obituary.
John A. Contesse was born at Convers, Canton Berne, Switzerland. Died suddenly,
immediately afternoon, July 20, 1901, at Miller's Landing, Indiana, where he had been
since the Saturday previous, on an outing with friends. He was aged 53 years, 2 mos., and
29 days. Mr. Contesse had been baptized in infancy in the Calvin church at Renan, and was
later in life confirmed.
He emigrated to the United States April 4, 1867, and settled in Wayne county, Ohio, and
from thence to Indiana, Huntington county, in 1869. His personal diary gives information
of his enlistment in the 2nd Regular Cavalry October 5, 1879, and his honorable discharge
at Omaha Barracks, Nebraska, May 9, 1891.
He had made three voyages to his native land. Shortly after his return from the second,
he was married to Harriet A. Rittenhouse, May 7, 1876. This most estimable lady passed to
her reward January 16, 1900. There are no living children. Nellie, an orphan child,
living with them a number of years, was much beloved by both Mr. and Mrs. Contesse.
Funeral service at the Christian church Monday at 10 o'clock. Interment in Woodlawn
cemetery. J.E. Etter.
