My suspected Rush County Vickery ancestors and their siblings are very
closely tied to early Rush County and Henry County, IN history.
1. Jehu Vickery, Sr. is on the 1800 Census for Randolph Co., NC with a
young family. Some of his sons went to Greene Co., Ohio during the
1810-1820 timeframe, before moving on to Illinois and Missouri. (they
did live in Rush Co., IN for a time, I think) At least two sons stayed
in Rush county. Jehu Sr. was a son of Christopher Vickery (born c1740-
died April 19, 1841 aged over 100 years) and Hannah Hodge who came from
a town near Winchester, Virginia to live in Randolph Co.,NC. In Clinton
Co., Ohio in 1818, Jehu's daughter Hannah married Merriman Straughn, for
whom the town of Straughn, Indiana is named, in Henry County to the
north. Jehu's daughter Lydia married Hiram Plummer, and they lived in
Tipton County, Indiana. Jehu also had another daughter, born between
1800-1810. I believe this daughter to be my 3x great grandmother, named
Jereter, who married Wiley WALL in North Carolina, probably in the area
of Rowan County or Randolph County around 1816-1820. I have not been
able to find marriage records for them and I think maybe they were
married as Quakers, but have not been able to verify this. Jereter Wall
was disowned from membership for her non-attendance of the Quaker church
in February of 1840 from the Providence Preparative Meeting of Center MM
of Guilford County, NC. Providence is located on Providence Church Road
in northern Randolph County, NC. Jehu Vickery was listed with his family
on the 1810 Census for Rowan County, NC. He later lived in Clinton
County, OH and then in Fayette Co., IN before settling in Rush Co., IN
permanently. His son Jehu Jr. lived in Rush County, before going to
Henry Co., IN where he was listed in 1840; his whereabouts are not known
in 1850; he was listed in Tippecanoe County, IN in the 1860 Census; he
apparently moved back to Henry County, IN. I don't know where he lived
in 1870. He is listed on the 1880 Census with his nephew, John Straughn,
son of his sister, Hannah Vickery Straughn. He was buried in Ebenezer
Cem, Rush County, IN in 1882. I presume that Jehu Sr. and Lydia Leonard
Vickery are also buried in Rush Co., IN.
2. Jereter, who I believe was the daughter of Jehu Vickery Sr. and Lydia
LEONARD, was born about 1801 or 1802 and died in Indiana on Feb 25,
1876. Her gravestone is in Henry County, IN and from it her birth date
was computed to be August 31, 1802. The accuracy of this birthdate is
not certain. I think Jereter was actually a bit older, probably born
about 1801. Her husband, my 3x great grandfather Wiley WALLS, born about
1799, was listed on the 1830 Census with a young family in Randolph
Co.,NC; he was listed in 1840 in Guilford County, NC in the same
neighborhood and same page as a large group of LEONARDs, including
Nathan Leonard, Joseph LEONARD Sr., Joseph LEONARD Jr. and other
Leonards. They probably were Jereter's cousins. The history of Rush
County, IN shows a reference to surname Levenworth or Levenwood. This
reference has been proved to be wrong. Many Vickery researchers have
compounded this mistake. John LEONARD and his wife Abigail were Quakers
at Center MM in uilford Co., NC and their daughter, Lydia LEONARD,
married Jehu Vickery, Sr. Wiley WALLS is listed in 1850 and 1860 in
Randolph County, NC with his family. After the war, Wiley, Jereter, his
son Brazilla Gardner Wall(s), and grandson William Franklin Walls all
made it up to Henry County, Indiana. I believe that Brazilla made the
trip first but they may have travelled together. A daughter, Ruth, and a
son, Josiah, stayed behind in Randolph County, NC. Their daughter Hannah
Walls, an unmarried woman, had just died on April 27, 1870 and was
buried in Providence Cemetery in Randolph County, NC. I have a
photograph tintype of Wiley Walls, taken about 1868-1871. Brazilla was
listed with a family on the 1870 Census in Henry County, IN but Wiley or
Jereter are nowhere to be found. I wonder if they were near Jehu
Vickery, JR or Jehu Vickery, SR in 1870. It is not known where or
exactly when Wiley Walls died, but he is probably buried in the same
cemetery as his wife Jereter, as her stone stated "JERETER Wife of WILEY
WALL". Wiley Walls probably died about 1870.
3. I have a photograph tintype of Jereter, which appears to be taken
about 1870-1875. I would like to find photographs of any Vickery
descendants of Rush County, Indiana. Martin Vickery and Salathiel
Vickery would have been Jereter's brothers who lived and died in Rush
County. Descendants include the PLUMMERs of Tipton County, IN and the
STRAUGHNs of Henry County, IN. I am in touch with some of each. It would
be very nice to compare photographs.
That is all for now from this end. I would appreciate this being given
to the local Rush County, IN historical society and Rush County
library, as I live in Michigan. Thanks very much.
Regards,
Tim Walls
