I've been overwhelmed with fellow genealogists passing this on to me,
and hope I'm not beating a dead horse here, but here is the note, about
HB 1540, forwarded, at Darlene's request for listmembers, with my
apologies if anyone already got this news. I have no way to know if
there is a real threat or not, nor how likely the bill is to pass. What
will YOU (the list member, etc) do if this bill passes and you can't get
a copy of your uncle's or grandfather's death certificate? What if your
sister has the death certificate of your parents and won't give you a
copy of it? What if a cousin wants to get a copy of your parents' death
certificates? I have no way of knowing the impact of HB 1540 here.

Indiana Birth & Death Record Closure
DearREADERS,
Another challenge to look into! Thanks to Barb for forwarding this
announcement posted on several Indiana counties genealogy mailing lists.
I am concerned that alternatives to preventing identity theft should be
arranged. Requiring a 100 year lapse on death record alone will
seriously hamper the ability to complete a medical family tree.
I would be interested in speaking with folks concerned about records
closure during tonight's internet radio show. Tune in by visiting
www.DearMYRTLE.com and call during the show 1-877-638-7234 between
9-10pm Eastern US.

Subject: IN House Bill 1540 - Birth and Death Records
I am sending this to you to get the word out about proposed legislation
in Indiana concerning Birth and Death Records. Would it be possible for
you to send this to people on your mail list or to people you know that
do genealogy in Indiana? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,

There is proposed legislation to prohibit public access to vital records
for the state of Indiana! House Bill (HB) 1540 can be read online at
http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2003/IN/IN1540.1.html
Some of the language in HB 1540 is:
"h. When one hundred (100) years has elapsed after the date of birth,
the records of those events in the custody of the state or local
registrar shall become available to the public....." There is much more
to read concerning HB 1540.
Have I gotten your attention yet? I sure hope so and I hope that each
and every one of us contacts our legislators about this. We've got to
contact our legistatures immediately telling them of our opposition
regarding HB 1540 as genealogists and family historians.
Please read on:
In this morning's Indianapolis Star in Section B City & State on page
3, House Bill 1540 is listed for Hearing on Wednesday morning at 10:30
from the Public Health Committee. Our emails and phone calls to
legislators will need to start immediately with follow up letters in the
mail on Monday!
Express your opposition to proposed HB 1540 adopting new privacy
standards for Indiana's public vital records!
Even if you live outside the state of Indiana you may be affected by
this HB. This applies to all of us - If we, at some point, wish to
become a member of an organization that requires us to prove our lineage
and HB 1540 becomes a law we will not have access to birth or death
records to do this. Our desire to become a members of any organization
that requires us to prove our lineage may be in jeopardy! Please contact
the persons that have authored this proposed legislature. The site where
you can find email address for IN Representatives is
http://www.in.gov/cgi-bin/legislative/contact/contact.pl
We are all concerned about identity theft. The state of Indiana requires
information from us that should safeguard the issues of theft identity.
Please contact your representatives by email, phone and follow-up with a
letter.
Thank you for reading this email.
