I'm tracing my Coon/Koon line from Virginia to Belmont County, Ohio to
Henry County, Indiana. I found the wills of John and Solomon Coon, father
and son, respectively. I'm trying to figure out the relationship of John
and Solomon to my 4th great grandmother, Nancy Coon. Nancy married Philip
Moore on 10 February 1814 in Belmont County, Ohio. She was born about 1792
in Virginia. From what I've discovered, Philip and Nancy remained in
Belmont, Monroe and Washington County, Ohio all of their lives, although I
have yet to find a record of their deaths.
Josiah Coon stated on the marriage record of Philip's and Nancy's daughter,
Hannah, that she was 18 and Archileus C. Gray, her groom, was 21. John
Coon, whose will I found, had a son named Josiah. He also had a daughter
named Nancy who was born about 1812 and listed as an idiot on the 1850
census, and a son named Conrad. Philip and Nancy also named one of their
sons Conrad. I believe the older Josiah may have been Nancy's brother.
There is also a connection between Delilah Coon, daughter of John Coon, and
Walter L. Gray, to both my Coon and Gray lines. Walter was born in New
York, as was Archileus. Walter and Delilah were living in Belmont County
in 1830 with two daughters under age 5. They moved to Henry County between
1832 and 1836. My g-g-grandmother, Nancy Jane Gray, daughter of Archileus
and Hannah, was born about 1833 in Indiana. All their other children were
born in Ohio. This is my connection, if I can only figure out how they fit.
I'm fairly certain that John Gray, from Belmont County, Ohio, was
Archileus' father. On the 1830 census, he's the only one who had a son in
Archileus' age range, and he's living Wayne Township, which is where my
Coons were living. The problem will be trying to trace him back to New
York since John is such a common name.
Are there any researchers who have knowledge of these two lines and can
help me figure out the connection? Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks!
