Thanks Susan. That was wonderful information you came up with.
Last night til the wee hours I managed to come up with more information on the
GARNER side. It appears that the matriarch, Elizabeth, was widowed sometime between
1870 and 1880, and her mysterious husband, named Edwin or Lucien GARNER (could have
been Franklin GARDNER or GARNER, one wonders) died between 1870 and 1880 and at
least two children, Phebe and Frank, were living with other families close to
Elizabeth in Greensboro. In 1880, Elizabeth GARNER, widow of Edwin/Lucien, was
living with Nate OVERMAN's family, but her relationship was listed as
'OTHER'.
No doubt that my great grandfather, William Franklin WALLS (March 27, 1862- Feb 23,
1934), was at that wedding. He lived with the same HOSIER family for several years,
we do not know how long but it was to young manhood, before he married in 1881. I
have obituaries for one or two HOSIER grandchildren in my papers.
My biggest puzzle is to figure out how the JAMES and GARNER families are linked in
North Carolina. I don't think they are linked, but there is a combined GARNER/JAMES
household in Randolph Co., NC as well, and this is where young William Franklin WALL
was living prior to 1870. I believe he lived with his mother, Hannah WALLS, before
she died, probably also in the household of Wiley and Jereter WALLS. I have never
been able to, despite years of searching, find William Franklin WALL or WALLS on the
1870 Census. I think the census takers simply missed him and his grandparents as
they were perhaps in some out of the way spot in Henry County, IN or in Hancock Co.,
IN or perhaps even still back in Randolph Co., NC. I have even tried to find them in
transit between NC and Indiana. William's uncle Brazilla Garner WALL (1845 NC -1926
IN), also known as "B. G." married as his 2nd wife a widow, Susannah (Presnall)
LINDAMOOD, a widow, in the same Friends church in 1881, so it is likely that his
middle name, Garner, was a filial link to some GARNER family in Randolph Co., NC or
Guilford Co., NC where he was born in 1845. Brazilla was a son of Wiley and Jereter.
Our link with the GARNERS or JAMES is still unknown and tenuous. The riddle: Why did
Brazilla Garner WALL get that middle name? Anyone interested in the GARNER family
can contact either myself or Zae Pierce, who is also descended from Wiley and
Jereter. She was the one who showed me where Jereter's grave was.
I have a photograph of both Wiley WALL and Jereter (VICKERY) WALLS/WALL, his wife..
I also have photographic images of several other unknown people who we simply cannot
identify. If anyone would like to see these photos I can email a copy to you.
Jereter is buried in the Brookshire Cemetery on Sulphur Springs Rd just a bit west
of downtown New Castle, and I believe she died a Methodist, but she was a Quaker
member of Center MM in Guilford Co., NC up until early 1840. Wiley was never a
member of any church, that I know of, but I would love to see any new evidence of
church membership.
I will post the GARNER/JAMES data that I managed to come up with last night.....stay
tuned.

Tim,
Arthur L. JAMES m. Phebe L. GARNER 11 March 1882 at the residence of Clark
Hosier (Hozier), 3 miles north of Greensboro, Henry co. The minister was
Seth Stafford of the Friends ("Quaker") Church. Arthur was a farmer in
Greensboro township.
Arthur & Phebe James attended the KENNARD family reunions of 1904 and 1905
in Wayne twp, Henry co.
Arthur died in 1921 and is buried at the Greensboro Cemetery. Phebe died in
1940 and is buried next to him. I have seen their gravestones.
They should be in the 1920 census, and Phebe should appear in the 1930
census, but I haven't looked for them--I actually researched this particular
James family before either census was available to the public!!!
Are you a descendent? I have been researching the JAMES family for over 20
years. I have more on Arthur's ancestry, and also a little bit on their
children if you're interested. Sorry though, nothing more on Phebe in my
records.
