GEORGE BARNARD
When George M. Barnard was appointed by President Roosevelt to the Interstate
Commerce Commission as a Republican member he said, "This recognition comes
as a result of the loyal support of my Indiana Democratic friends. I am
deeply grateful and shall endeavor to conduct myself . . . so as to be
worthy of their confidence."
The record of George Barnard during the last four years shows plainly that
he lived up to that pledge, for he was an outstanding public servant. He
never allowed partisanship to interfere with what he conceived to be the
best interests of the nation. He determined to see to it that the great
American transportation system would be so regulated as to serve the interests
of all parts of the country and to aid in its growth. He was never narrow
or sectional.
Mr. Barnard was a former prosecuting attorney in Henry County and former
mayor of New Castle. He served many years on the Indiana Public Service
Commission and his aim was always devotion to the public good. The nation
has lost an able and dedicated public servant through his untimely death
in Washington,

George M. Barnard
Although he had been gone from New Castle for a few years, this was always
"home" to George M. Barnard and he was one of us. Mr. Barnard had a
distinguished
career as an attorney and a public official. He served two terms as prosecuting
attorney of Henry county and a period as mayor of New Castle. Warren McCray,
then governor of Indiana, recognized Mr. Barnard's abilities and named
him to the public service commission. He served about two years, resigning
to reenter the practice of law. Then in 1941 he was again called to the
public service commission by Governor Schricker and continued until he
was called to Washington to serve as a member of the important interstate
commerce commission, a post he filled with honor to himself.,and distinction.
Mr. Barnard was an honest and sincere public official. He had a keen sense
of humor and held the respect of everyone. George Barnard will he missed
both here and in Washington.
