Mrs. Mary V. Barnard, age 94, widely known New Castle resident, widow of
Judge William 0. Barnard, died Friday evening at 6 o'clock at her home,
131 No. 10th St., following an illness of several weeks.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Friends
church with the Rev. Jesse Stanfield, pastor, and the Rev. Norval Webb
of Richmond officiating. The casket will be open at the church from 2 to
3 o clock, but will be closed during the service. Burial is to be made
in South mound cemetery and will be private. The family requests that flowers
be omitted.
The body has been removed from the Stanley mortuary to the residence, 131
N. 10th St., where friends may call after 3 p. m. today.
Mrs. Barnard was the oldest of 8 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Nathan H.
Ballenger of Spiceland. After graduating from the Spiceland academy, she
came to New Castle as a school teacher. She and Mr. Barnard were married
Dec. 22, 1876. Judge Barnard preceded her in death in 1939, breaking a
marriage tie of more than 62 years. Mrs. Barnard was a birthright member
of the Friends church and took an active interest in the Henry County Historical
society. Mr. Barnard was a former judge of the Henry circut court and also
served a term in congress from the old 6th congressional district.
Surviving are 4 children, Paul Barnard of Hagerstown; George M. Barnard,
Washington, D. C., Ralph W. Barnard of New Castle and Mrs. Herbert Griffiths
of Hollywood, Calif. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 8 great I
grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Charles M. Cunningham of Indianapolis.
