OBITUARY
Malinda Barnard, daughter of William and Matilda Gardner Barnard was born
in Union County, Indiana Nov. 19, 1822. While a young girl she removed
with the family to Fayette County where she continued to reside until 1877,
when she and an older sister, Lydia G., came to Spiceland, where she lived
continuously until her death which occurred near noon, August 7, 1910.
She was one of a large family, all of whom have passed beyond excepting
two brothers, Sylvester, of Middletown, Indiana, and Byron, of Halstead,
Kansas.
Although for quite a while almost a helpless invalid, she was patient and
remarkably uncomplaining. From birth she was a member of The Society of
Friends and while not demonstrative as to her religious belief, she evinced
by her kindness of spirit, benevolence and hospitality that the Christian
life is one of doing, rather than one of professing.
She entertained a great fondness for her nieces and nephews, which found
expression in acts of kindness and words of encouragement. She was a true
friend and a kind obliging neighbor. There was no deception in her makeup,
so frank and honest was she that those who knew her less intimately she
may have sometimes seemed abrupt and blunt, but those who understood her
best knew her to be kind and considerate. Her long life of nearly eighty-eight
years has closed peacefully. "She has come to her grave in a full age like
a shock of corn cometh in its season," leaving behind her sweet memories
to all who knew and loved her.
