Obituary

Nathan H. Ballenger died Sunday night at his home six miles southwest of
town. He was ill only a short time and his demise was entirely unexpected.
He was complaining Saturday but was not ill til Sunday evening. The deceased
had been a prominent man in this county for nearly half a century, being
82 years of age. He was a native of Guilford County, North Carolina, and
came to this county with his parents when he was nine years old. When 24
years old he was elected county assessor and ten years later represented
this district in the legislature.
He was married twice, the first time to Margaret Hubbard, of which union
six children survive, Mrs William O Barnard, of this city, Charles Ballenger
and Mrs Emma Seaford of Spiceland, Walter Ballenger of Denver, Col., Mrs
Charles Cunningham, of Indianapolis, and Albert Ballenger of Mexico City.
Mrs Ballenger who died in 1880, was an acknowledged minister in the Friends
Church. Mr Ballenger was married again in 1884 to Mrs Martha Kelly who
with one daughter Margaret, survive him.
The funeral services were held in the Friends church at Spiceland on Tuesday
afternoon.
