Hi, Julie,
I have done this for the land my gggrandfather got for his service in the
War of 1812; I learned about it at the National Archives. Go to the Bureau
of Land Management General Land Office Records webpage at
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx. Go to "Search Documents
by Type," and you will notice at the upper left a box labeled "Location."
Since you don't know the location, you need to scroll down in the list of
states to "Any State." Then go below that and type in the veteran's name.
Check both the Patentee and Warrantee boxes, then hit "Search Patents." A
list will come up. If the veteran has a common name, there will be lots of
listings. Since you have the number, just look for it in the column labeled
"Document." The location will be given. You can get an image of the
document by clicking on "Image" and the pertinent details under
"Accession".
Hope this helps.
