Hello all, I'm from NYC and I'm tracking down some Indiana heritage. My
great-great grandfather George L. Byrne was born in Corydon on 5/17/1879 to John &
Rose. The men of the family worked as stone-cutters. I'll start with what I found
through censuses:
Henry Byrne (b. Ireland 1824) left Ireland sometime in the 1840s for Canada. He married a
Catherine in Canada and their first born was John J. Byrne. The Byrnes lived somewhere in
NY in the 1860s, where their younger children Thomas & Maggie were born, before moving
to Pennsylvania.
John J. Byrne married a Rose V. from Erie and had their first children, Florence, Minnie,
and Harry, before moving to Corydon, Harrison Co. where John & George were born in the
1870s. They lived there for a number of years as I found Henry Byrne died there in 1887
at age 63. I had trouble tracking down the family past that time, but I had found George
L. Byrne in 1900 at an Alameda, California boarding house working as a salesman.
He came to Brooklyn, NY soon after and married my great-great grandmother Ellen Nolan in
1909. They had 8 children and George died in January 1941 in Astoria, Queens, NY. The
family has since branched out from NYC and all but one of George's children have since
passed away. Florence Byrne (age 83) is alive and well in Astoria, Queens. If there are
any possible distant relatives, please contact me.
