Unfortunately, there were passenger lists kept on steamboats as there were on ships that
came across the ocean. The steamboats operated kind of like trains and they tended to
stop and pick up people just standing along the riverbank waving at them and dropping
people off the same way. In many cases they didn't even collect fares from
passengers. If you were taking your goods via the steamboat you could just pay freight
and ride along with your goods and sleeping on the deck with your belongings.
