I am trying to learn more about Charles C. CANOLES, a member of my Maryland
CANOLES family. Charles was born in 1825 in Baltimore County, Maryland,
and probably died in Harrison County, Indiana between 1900 and 1910.
Charles was a wanderer, and also had several wives. From what we have been
able to put together, he left Maryland in the 1840s, married for the first
time in Ohio to Eliza THARP, was in Indiana in 1849 (not sure where), in
Iowa from 1852 until 1859, then back to Maryland by 1860. After his first
wife (by whom he had 13 children!) left him, he returned to Indiana, and
was listed in the 1870 census in Floyd County with a second wife named
Susan age 32 born in Ireland. By 1880 he was married to 3rd wife Nancy
(SPENCER) KENDALL and was living in Crawford County, Indiana. Apparently
Charles married a 4th time sometime in 1883 to a Martha HIGHFIELD/HIGHFILL
or Martha OLDEN, and finally, in 1885 to Catharine COOK. By this time he
was living in Harrison County, Indiana. He was listed in the 1900 Harrison
County census, but had died by the time of the 1910 census.
According to census records, Charles' children by his Indiana wives
included Mary CANOLES (born c1870), William M. CANOLES (born c1879), John
Roscoe CANOLES born 1880, and Laura B. CANOLES (born 1884). John Roscoe
married Lillie LINCOLN in Harrison County in 1900, and Laura married John
E. STONECIPHER in 1901. I know nothing about the other children.
If anyone knows anything about Charles, his wives, or any of his children,
I would love to hear from you!
Best regards,
