Monday I located the old Booker Family Cemetery on the Donald Engleman place, which was
once the farm of George Booker and Nancy (Conyers) Booker. Actually the cemetery is
straddling their property line with Jerry Martin's place. It may actually be 1/2 mile
from the Old Forest Road to the south which is center for Section 24, T3S, R3E. If so, it
may be recorded as the Alexander Mathes Burying Ground. If past the center it may be
recorded as the colored cemetery. The handed down story is that the Bookers came from KY
after freeing their slaves, but they followed them to the Corydon area farm and continued
to work and live near them. There were 6 stones on the west side of the line with the only
visible name as Elizabeth. There were 6 stones on the east side without names. Mrs.
Engleman called this the Booker Cem. and thought the Elizabeth was a Mathes. Any light on
this?
George Booker died March-April 1829 and was buried there. His wife Nancy died about 1849.
