Betty,
I dont know if this will help you any, but you may find interesting
anyway. This was recently sent to me from another person researching the
Roberts family of Harrison County. Below is what was sent to me in it's
entirety.
*************************************************************************
This an excerpt from a letter written by Jessie Roberts to Iva Gurtz. The
letter is undated but probably written sometime in 1974.
" I just remembered an old romance that went wrong in the Hockaday family
back in the middle 1800s. Grandmother's brother John [Hockaday] went to Ill.
Maybe to work or maybe to escape Lincoln's draft laws. They didn't check up
on boys draft age then if they were missing from home localities. Uncle John
seems to have been engaged to Rachel Anne Stonecipher who you may remember
as Warden Lincoln's wife and mother of Charlie Lincoln & other Lincoln
children. Warden was in Ill. too & came home before Uncle John did & he was
interested in Rachel Anne too so he told her that Uncle John was was either
married or engaged to an Ill. girl so why didn't she just marry him & show
John how little she cared. Well of course she was all hot & jealous & mad &
she did just that so later Uncle John came back & when Rachel Anne found out
he wasn't married she & her mother went right up to Hockadays & asked
Grandmother H. if Rachel to divorce Warden if John would still marry her but
divorce was considered disgraceful then & Granny said he couldn't but Uncle
John went back to Ill. & married the girl Warden said he was going with.
When Uncle John in later years came back to visit relatives Warden would
bring Rachel Anne to see him & they would sit around looking sad & hardly
saying a word. Once Warden said you still like him don't you. Rachel Ann
said yes I do & he said well I dont blame you. Well that's it."

Now, of interest to me is that I have the following marriage in my Hanks
famliy
John Hockaday m. Lucinda Hanks 18Apr1867 in Marion County, IL.
Same John Hockaday? or just a coincidence?
Also, if this helps you any, I have noticed in my Marion County, IL research
that there were Stonecipher families present in that county. I dont know of
any connections to my families there, but have come across the name quite
often. Hope this info helps you out.
Ron Hanks
Other Harrison County, IN names I am interested in;
ROBERTS, GREEN(E), LINCOLN, CRUTCHFIELD, BOUGHER(S), SAPPENFIELD, MILES,

Subject: [INHARRIS] Stonecipher families
Hello List,
I'm trying to connect the STONECIPHER families in Harrison Co.,Indiana.
Most
seem to have lived in Corydon. I have a lot of information but want
to
share
information with someone else that may be able to fill in some
blanks.
