Note: Another listing was published in the Indiana Historical Society Magazine several
years ago. There is a film of some estate papers, on file at the Indiana Historical
Society Library, that include an interview with a woman who added some details about some
graves marked with river rock. These graves, about 15 in number marked burials of slaves
who died on their way north in the underground railway.
John Hurst, also known as "Capt." John Hurst, is also buried here. A government
marker was placed on his grave, about 1957, through the efforts of a kinsman, Clara Hurst
Miles and the Hoosier Elm Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the Revolution.
The cemetery is on private land, and a visit is planned the first weekend in July 2003, as
part of the Hurst Reunion in Corydon, Indiana, marking the 200 year anniversary of the
arrival of the Hurst family in Harrison County, Indiana Territory.
Anyone with connection to or interest in the Hurst family or their allied families, are
encouraged to attend. The reunion contact is Eric Hurst, Indianapolis, Indiana. email
